ExactCare Lite Travel Insurance from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is a post-departure travel insurance plan offering coverage for medical emergencies while traveling. It is ideal for last-minute trips or travelers not concerned about protecting nonrefundable trip deposits, and it’s all backed by a provider you can trust.
ExactCare Lite is also BHTP’s dedicated road trip travel insurance plan, built exclusively for domestic U.S. drive vacations. Underwritten by Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (AM Best A++), it provides reliable, affordable protection for the mishaps most likely to happen on a drive vacation.
Unlike other BHTP plans that focus on flight delays, trip cancellation, or international travel, ExactCare Lite starts where your trip starts: the moment you leave home. As a post-departure plan, all coverages activate once your trip begins. While it does not include pre-departure trip cancellation, it offers important protections such as:
Post-Departure Travel Insurance is a type of travel insurance that activates only after you start your trip from the moment you leave home. Unlike traditional travel insurance that often includes trip cancellation or pre-departure coverage, post-departure plans focus on protecting you while you are actually traveling.
In short: Post-departure travel insurance is your safety net once your journey begins, ensuring you are covered for emergencies while on the road, in the air, or at your destination
ExactCare Lite is built for a specific traveler. It's not for everyone but for the right road tripper, it's the most focused and cost-effective coverage available from BHTP.
You're driving to your destination not flying, cruising, or traveling internationally. Your trip is at least 100 miles from home, and you want coverage for the medical and travel issues most likely to occur on a road trip.
You've booked hotels, attraction tickets, or events in advance. If something interrupts your trip (like weather, delays, or vehicle issues), this plan can help cover transportation costs to return home or continue your journey.
Your domestic health plan covers you, but out-of-network ER visits and urgent care during a road trip can be expensive. ExactCare Lite's $50,000 primary medical coverage pays first before your health insurance reducing out-of-pocket exposure significantly.
A cost-effective option for families and groups looking for affordable medical and travel protection without paying for trip cancellation coverage.
ExactCare Lite can be purchased up to the day before you leave. You don't need to plan weeks in advance. If you decide on a Thursday to leave Saturday, you can still get covered.
Whether you're exploring within the U.S. or traveling abroad, ExactCare Lite offers medical and evacuation coverage for unexpected situations during your trip.
ExactCare Lite provides essential protection for your road trips and last-minute travels, keeping you safe from unexpected medical and travel mishaps.

ExactCare Lite is designed as a post-departure travel insurance plan, which means coverage begins only after your trip starts. Before purchasing, keep these key points in mind:
ExactCare Value provides secondary medical coverage. Knowing what this means helps you decide whether this plan fits your health insurance situation.
You're traveling through a state you don't live in and develop severe chest pains. The nearest ER is out of your home insurance network. ExactCare Lite's $50,000 primary medical benefit pays the ER bill directly before your home health plan even gets involved.
Emergency Medical - $50,000An accident or unexpected event interrupts your trip, and you need to return home early. ExactCare Lite can reimburse transportation expenses up to $1,000 if your trip is interrupted due to a covered unforeseen reason, such as an accident.
Trip Interruption - $1,000 (transportation only)A sudden storm closes the highway and you're stuck at a motel for an extra night. Trip delay coverage up to $1,000 reimburses reasonable additional hotel and meal expenses while you wait out the delay.
Trip Delay - $1,000Your bags are stolen from your locked vehicle at a rest stop. ExactCare Lite reimburses lost or stolen personal effects up to a maximum of $1,000 but note: the first item is capped at $500, each additional item at $250. Jewelry, watches, furs, and electronics share a separate $500 aggregate sub-limit. Items over $150 require original receipts.
Baggage Loss - $1,000 maxYou suffer a serious fall hiking in a remote national park accessible only by a long drive. Emergency evacuation to a hospital potentially by helicopter is covered up to $500,000. This can be the most financially devastating cost on a domestic trip without coverage.
Medical Evacuation - $500,000If you purchase ExactCare Lite within 15 days of your first trip payment, eligible pre-existing conditions are covered. A diabetic episode or heart condition flare-up that requires emergency treatment during your drive vacation would be covered under the medical benefit.

BHTP ExactCare Lite® is Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection's domestic-only, post-departure road trip travel insurance plan. It is designed specifically for U.S. residents taking drive vacations trips made by car, RV, or other ground transportation at least 100 miles from their home. It provides primary emergency medical coverage up to $50,000, medical evacuation up to $500,000, trip interruption up to $1,000 (transportation costs only), trip delay up to $1,000, missed connection up to $500, baggage loss up to $1,000, baggage delay up to $250, and accidental death and dismemberment up to $10,000. It is NOT for flights, cruises, or international travel.
No. ExactCare Lite is a post-departure plan, meaning all coverages activate only after you have left home and begun your trip. There is no pre-departure trip cancellation benefit. If you cancel before your trip starts for any reason ExactCare Lite will not reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable hotel stays, attraction tickets, or event tickets. If you want pre-departure cancellation protection, you need a plan from the standard BHTP ExactCare series (ExactCare Value, ExactCare, or ExactCare Extra).
ExactCare Lite provides primary emergency medical coverage. This means it pays eligible medical expenses first before your domestic health insurance processes the claim. You do not need to file with your home health insurer first. This is especially valuable for road trippers who may be far from home and out of their health insurance network, where out-of-network ER or urgent care costs can be significant.
No. ExactCare Lite is strictly for domestic U.S. drive vacations. It does not cover: (1) trips made by airplane, (2) cruise vacations, or (3) international travel outside the United States. If you are flying to your destination, BHTP recommends ExactCare Value, ExactCare, or ExactCare Extra. For cruises, WaveCare is the appropriate plan. This restriction is fundamental to ExactCare Lite's design purchasing it for a trip involving flights or international travel would result in no coverage for flight-related events.
The trip interruption benefit in ExactCare Lite covers up to $1,000 in transportation costs only not all non-refundable expenses when your trip is interrupted by a covered event (such as a traffic accident). This means if you need to return home early or travel to a medical facility, the cost of transportation (gas, rental car, bus, etc.) is covered up to $1,000. Unlike the full trip cancellation/interruption benefit in other ExactCare plans, this does not reimburse prepaid hotel nights, attraction tickets, or event costs that you miss out on due to the interruption.
Yes, with a timing condition. The pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver is available if you purchase ExactCare Lite within 15 days of making your initial trip payment or deposit. Once the waiver is active, the policy applies a 60 days look-back period prior to the Policy Effective Date. This means any condition for which you had symptoms that would prompt a reasonable person to seek medical advice, received medical advice or treatment, or were taking prescription medication (with any change in dosage) in the 60 days before your coverage start date is considered a pre-existing condition. Without the waiver, all pre-existing conditions are excluded. If you purchase after the 15-day window, the waiver does not apply.
Road trip travel insurance like ExactCare Lite generally costs between 5% and 7% of your total trip cost. The final premium depends on factors including the traveler's age, trip duration, and state of residence. For example, a $2,000 road trip might cost between $100–$140 for coverage. To get an exact premium, use the quote tool at americanvisitorinsurance.com you can compare and buy in under 5 minutes.
Yes. ExactCare Lite can be purchased up until the day before your departure date, making it suitable for spontaneous road trip planners. However, to qualify for the pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver which adds coverage for eligible conditions you already have you must purchase within 15 days of your first trip payment or deposit. Buying later is still possible and still provides the core medical, delay, and baggage benefits, but without the pre-existing waiver.
Yes. BHTP ExactCare Lite includes a 15-day free look period from the date of purchase. If you cancel the policy within 15 days of purchase before your trip has begun and before filing any claims you receive a full premium refund. Once 15 days have passed, or once your trip has started or a claim has been filed, the policy is non-refundable.
The key differences: ExactCare Lite has higher emergency medical coverage ($50,000 primary vs. $15,000 secondary in ExactCare Value), but ExactCare Value includes trip cancellation (up to $20,000) which Lite does not. ExactCare Value also covers flights and international travel, while Lite is domestic drive-only. For road trippers who want better medical protection and don't need pre-departure cancellation coverage, ExactCare Lite's $50,000 primary medical is a meaningful advantage. For travelers who want the ability to cancel before departure, ExactCare Value is more appropriate even for road trips.
ExactCare Lite is available in 40 U.S. states. The plan was launched as BHTP's first domestic-only coverage plan. Specific state availability is subject to regulatory approval and may change check the current quote tool at americanvisitorinsurance.com for availability in your state of residence. Benefits and terms may also vary by state for residents of certain states (such as NY and WA).
