The US government has issued a proclamation on October 4th 2019 that proof of proper US immigrant health insurance is required to be issued US visas to enter the country. The proclamation states that this new rule will become effective from the 3rd of November 2019.
This new rule will have an immediate effect on prospective new US immigrants, in particular immigrants hoping to join families currently living in the US. Immigrant visas are issued to eligible family members of US citizens who are then eligible to receive the permanent residency status, commonly known as US Green cards. This new rule is however not expected to affect refugees, students or US asylum seekers.
Once this rule comes into effect, prospective US immigrants have to provide proof of having adequate US immigrant health insurance to take care of their healthcare expenses. US visas can be denied if proof of proper US health insurance for the new immigrant is not available.
