JapanSecure is a short-term travel medical insurance plan built specifically for U.S. and non-U.S. citizens traveling to Japan - covering hospitalization, urgent care, emergency medical evacuation, and the acute onset of pre-existing conditions. Plans start from just $1/day.
Trusted by thousands of international travelers
JapanSecure is underwritten through Tokio Marine HCC (TMHCC (CI) Insurance SPC Ltd and Houston Casualty Company) - one of the world's leading specialty insurance groups, giving you the financial backing of an A++ (Superior) rated carrier.
Atlas JapanSecure is a comprehensive travel medical insurance plan from WorldTrips created specifically for international travelers visiting Japan. Whether you're traveling for sightseeing, business, visiting family, or staying as a Digital Nomad, the plan helps protect you against unexpected medical expenses during your trip.
Unlike many standard travel insurance plans, JapanSecure offers $0 deductible coverage, so eligible medical benefits begin without you first paying a deductible. Travelers can choose medical coverage ranging from $50,000 to $2 million, with benefits for hospitalization, emergency room visits, physician care, ambulance services, prescription medications, and emergency medical evacuation.
Another standout feature is its acute onset of pre-existing condition coverage for eligible travelers under age 80, providing valuable protection if a stable pre-existing medical condition suddenly becomes life-threatening while traveling in Japan.
What is great about this plan: Built specifically for Japan travel, so the benefit structure (secondary/excess coverage, no PPO network restrictions outside the U.S.) matches how healthcare actually works for visitors in Japan. The $0 deductible means simpler, more predictable out-of-pocket costs. Acute onset of pre-existing conditions is covered up to age 80, which is broader than many budget Japan travel policies.
Downsides to this plan: Like most travel medical plans, it must be purchased before departure - you cannot buy it after you've already arrived in Japan. Travelers 80 and older are capped at $10,000 in coverage. There's no trip cancellation benefit (only trip interruption after departure).
After buying the plan, travelers can get their plan documents and insurance ID card using the JapanSecure login. At American Visitor Insurance, US Travelers can contact the JapanSecure customer service team to get help with plan details, quotes, and other questions. Our licensed agents are glad to help.

A pre-existing condition means any injury, illness, sickness, disease, or other physical, medical, mental, or nervous disorder that, with reasonable medical certainty, existed at the time of application or during the 2 years prior to the effective date - whether or not it was previously diagnosed or disclosed.
Acute onset of a pre-existing condition is a sudden, unexpected outbreak or recurrence that is short in duration, rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. A chronic or congenital condition, or one that gradually worsens, does not qualify.
The Acute Onset of Pre-Existing Condition benefit applies only if all of the following are true:
A 45-year-old business traveler from Canada purchases a JapanSecure plan with a $100,000 maximum before a 10-day trip to Tokyo. Midway through the trip, he develops a severe case of appendicitis and requires emergency surgery and a 3-day hospital stay.

$0 Deductible Coverage
Eligible medical expenses are covered from the first dollar-no deductible to meet before benefits begin.
100% co-insurance in-network
No co-insurance percentage the plan pays a pre-set amount per service. You pay the gap between that amount and the actual bill.
Japan's healthcare system offers excellent quality of care, but foreign visitors are typically expected to pay in full at the time of treatment - Japan's national health insurance system does not cover tourists, and most Japanese hospitals do not bill international insurers directly. A hospital stay or emergency surgery without coverage can run into the thousands of dollars, payable upfront.
JapanSecure provides a financial safety net so you can focus on your trip, not the bill.
JapanSecure policyholders have access to quality medical care through Air Doctor.
Two free doctor visits per policy, with no upfront payment or claim filing required (a third visit is included on policies over six months).
In-clinic visits, telehealth (video), or in-home/hotel appointments within your coverage area outside the U.S. - Air Doctor connects you with vetted, local providers wherever you are in Japan. Deductibles and co-pays apply. Through the Air Doctor app, policyholders can connect with certified doctors, specialists, and healthcare providers.
Unlike Atlas America, which uses the UnitedHealthcare PPO network inside the U.S., JapanSecure does not restrict you to a preferred provider network while in Japan. There is no PPO outside the U.S., so you're free to visit any licensed medical provider you choose.
