What is Atlas International Insurance?

Atlas International Insurance is designed for travelers seeking reliable overseas health and medical coverage outside the USA. Available through American Visitor Insurance, this comprehensive international travel medical insurance is ideal for both non-U.S. residents traveling abroad and U.S. citizens traveling internationally.

Atlas International is one of the few international visitor travel insurance plans that offers no coinsurance within the PPO network, helping reduce out-of-pocket costs during treatment.

This international health insurance plan for Schengen visa travel meets all Schengen visa requirements, making it a popular choice for travelers visiting Europe. It is widely recommended as a dependable overseas travel medical insurance option for short-term and long-term trips.

Designed to take the risk out of traveling abroad, Atlas International includes coverage for:
  • Emergency medical expenses and hospitalization
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Acute onset of pre-existing conditions (up to age 79 for life-threatening situations)
  • Acts of terrorism

info

Overall, Atlas International is a strong choice for anyone looking for affordable international travel insurance with trusted support and comprehensive benefits.

How Much Coverage Does Atlas International Travel Insurance Offer?

Atlas International Insurance provides flexible international travel medical insurance coverage limits based on the traveler’s age and selected plan.

The policy maximum is the total dollar amount available for all eligible medical expenses. Once this limit is reached, no further benefits are payable.

Coverage Options by Age
  • Age 80+: Up to $10,000
  • Age 65 to 79: $50,000 or $100,000
  • Under Age 65: $50,000, $100,000, $250,000, $500,000, $1,000,000, or $2,000,000

This flexibility makes Atlas International a strong choice for travelers seeking affordable overseas health insurance, whether you need basic coverage or high-limit global medical travel insurance for extended trips abroad.

What is a deductible in Atlas International Insurance?

In Atlas International Insurance, the deductible is the out-of-pocket amount you pay before your international travel medical insurance starts covering eligible expenses.

Once met, your Atlas overseas health insurance pays according to the policy.

Deductible options: $0, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000

Choosing a lower deductible travel insurance plan means a higher premium but lower upfront costs during a claim. A higher deductible international insurance plan reduces your premium but increases your initial out-of-pocket medical expenses when seeking care abroad.

AM Best rates the financial strength of insurance companies - their ability to pay claims when you need them. An A++ (Superior) rating is the highest possible rating AM Best awards, given to companies with the strongest balance sheets and claims-paying ability.
WorldTrips (underwritten by TMHCC / Houston Casualty Company) holds this top rating, along with AA- from Standard & Poor's. In practical terms, this means that if you file a large claim - say, a $150,000 emergency hospitalization or a $200,000 medical evacuation - there is an extremely high degree of confidence the claim will be paid in full. For travelers taking high-value trips or those with higher medical risk, the A++ rating is a meaningful differentiator.
Atlas Travel does not provide any reimbursement if you must cancel your trip prior to departure. However, it does include a Trip Interruption benefit if you must end your trip early due to a covered reason.Note that Atlas Travel medical insurance has a lower premium than most travel insurance plans because it does not include a Trip Cancellation benefit. It also provides more medical benefits with higher coverage limits than most travel insurance plans.
Atlas Travel policyholders who are U.S. citizens or non-U.S. citizens traveling outside of the U.S. will be covered under Atlas International, which provides coverage outside of the United States. Atlas Travel policyholders who are non-U.S. citizens (and home country is not the United States) traveling to the United States will be covered under Atlas America. (For the purpose of this American visitor insurance coverage, the United States also includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

The correct plan will be automatically selected for you when you purchase your Atlas Travel plan, depending on whether your trip includes coverage for the U.S. (You will only be covered for the U.S. if you are a non-U.S. citizen, your home country is not the United States, and all or part of your travel includes the U.S.).
Yes. Atlas International plan is available for both US and Non-US citizens traveling outside the US.This plan is available from 5 days to 364 days.
The main requirements for applying for Atlas insurance is the travelers passport details and the travel dates. You can apply for Atlas travel insurance online on American Visitor Insurance or call (877)-340-7910 to get help while applying.
Atlas International includes vacation sports coverage as a standard part of the plan - no rider or additional premium required. This covers injuries and illnesses sustained while participating in recreational sports such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, cycling, and similar activities. What is not covered without an additional rider: extreme or professional sports, competitive events, motor racing, and high-risk adventure activities such as skydiving or base jumping. If you are planning extreme adventure activities, ask about the optional Crisis Response rider. With Atlas International available on American Visitor Insurance, recreational sports coverage is simply included.
Yes this is one of Atlas International's most important differentiators. Acute onset of pre-existing conditions is covered for travelers up to age 79 years. For travelers under 70, coverage is up to the overall policy maximum. For travelers aged 70 through 79, coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions is up to the overall maximum limit or $100,000, whichever is lower, plus up to $25,000 for emergency medical evacuation related to the pre-existing condition.
Travelers aged 80 and above are not covered for acute onset of pre-existing conditions, and the maximum plan limit is $10,000. As with all travel medical plans, 'acute onset' means a sudden and unexpected flare-up requiring treatment within 24 hours - it does not cover ongoing or routine treatment of a pre-existing condition.
Atlas International is an excellent option for medium-term international travelers, but has one key limitation for long-term travel: it is renewable for up to 364 days per year, meaning you must renew annually rather than enjoying continuous multi-year coverage under a single policy. Each renewal resets your deductible. For trips of up to one year, Atlas International is hard to beat - it's comprehensive, well-rated, and covers sports by default.
For travelers planning to live abroad for more than one year continuously, some plans allow renewals up to 24 months under the same policy, which may be preferable. For truly long-term international living (2+ years), both plans may be better supplemented by a global expat health insurance plans which provide annual renewable worldwide coverage including the USA.
If you are at least 14 days old and traveling internationally, you are eligible for coverage. You must purchase coverage for at least 5 days, though you do not have to travel all 5 days.If you are under age 65, you may select an overall maximum limit between $50,000 and $2,000,000. Applicants age 65 to 79 may choose an overall maximum limit of $50,000 or $100,000. Atlas Travel insurance offers a $10,000 policy maximum to applicants over age 80.
