What Is Medical Only Travel Insurance for Seniors?

Medical only travel insurance for seniors is a type of travel insurance that covers unexpected medical expenses during a trip, without covering trip cancellation or travel costs. These plans focus on healthcare protection such as doctor visits, hospitalization, emergency medical evacuation, and prescription medication while traveling abroad.

For US seniors, this is often the smarter, more affordable choice. If you've already booked a non-refundable vacation you want to protect financially, you may want trip cancellation insurance. But if your primary concern is "What happens if I get sick or injured abroad?" medical-only travel insurance is exactly what you need.

Senior travelers can compare travel medical insurance plans available through American Visitor Insurance that are designed to provide medical protection while traveling internationally. Popular medical-only travel insurance plans include Atlas International, Patriot International Lite, and Travel Medical Outbound USA Basic. These plans provide coverage for medical emergencies, hospitalization, and emergency medical evacuation while traveling outside the home country.

Travel Tip for Seniors

When getting a quote, simply enter $0 as your trip cost. This tells the system you want medical protection only without paying for trip cancellation coverage you don't need. Your premium will be significantly lower as a result.

Who Should Buy Medical Only Travel Insurance?

Medical only travel insurance is a good option for seniors who primarily want protection against unexpected medical emergencies while traveling internationally. This type of coverage may be suitable for:

  • Seniors taking short international trips
  • Retirees visiting family overseas
  • Travelers who have already paid for their trip and are not concerned about cancellation coverage
  • Seniors with Medicare traveling outside the United States
  • Travelers looking for affordable emergency medical coverage

For these travelers, medical only plans can provide essential protection against high healthcare costs abroad.

Why Seniors Choose Medical Only Travel Insurance?

Many seniors prefer medical-only coverage because their main concern is healthcare access during travel. Reasons seniors choose this type of plan:

  • Medicare usually does not cover healthcare outside the United States
  • International medical care can be very expensive
  • Plans are more affordable than comprehensive travel insurance
  • Seniors only need protection against medical emergencies

This makes medical-only plans a practical option for senior travelers.

Does Medicare Cover You When You Travel Internationally?

No, Medicare is a US federal health insurance program designed to cover medical care inside the United States and its territories. The coverage stops when you enter a different country. This includes:

Medicare Part A (Hospital Coverage)

✕ No international coverage

Medicare Part B (Doctor Visits & Outpatient Care)

✕ No international coverage

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Offer limited emergency coverage abroad in very specific situations, but it is not comprehensive and should not be relied upon for international travel.

Medigap Supplement

Medigap plans provide overseas emergency medical coverage but the benefit comes with a $50,000 lifetime limit and a $250 deductible requirement.

Bridging the Coverage Gap:

Because Medicare provides little or no coverage outside the United States, many senior travelers purchase international travel medical insurance before leaving the country. Travel insurance provides coverage for medical emergencies that occur abroad while helping to pay for emergency evacuation expenses and other travel-related dangers.

Seniors can use American Visitor Insurance to compare different international travel insurance options which lets them examine various policies before selecting the best protection for their overseas travels.

What Travel Insurance Mistakes Should Seniors Avoid?

Senior travelers should be aware of common mistakes when purchasing travel insurance to ensure they have the right protection during international trips.

  1. Assuming Medicare covers international travel: Medicare generally does not cover medical expenses outside the United States.
  2. Buying insurance after travel begins: Most travel insurance plans must be purchased before departure.
  3. Choosing low coverage limits: Medical treatment and emergency evacuation abroad can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
  4. Ignoring pre-existing condition coverage: Many plans only cover the acute onset of pre-existing conditions, not routine treatment.
  5. Not checking medical evacuation coverage: Emergency medical evacuation can cost $50,000 or more, so adequate coverage is important.

Travel insurance coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions

Does Travel Insurance Cover 100% Of Expenses?

Typically not. First of all, travel insurance is only for unexpected medical illness or injury. There are many medical expenses which may be desired (teeth cleaning or check, wellness check, immunization) which will not be covered. We sell two types of policies: fixed and comprehensive plans. The fixed plans have limited coverage to a set amount or cap. If you are charged more than the policy allows for a specific medical expense, then you will have to pay the difference.

A comprehensive plan is more complete, but there is a deductible that must be paid before the insurance pays out any amount and often there is coinsurance to pay after, although this is usually limited to 20% of the first $5000. So, with a comprehensive plan, you can calculate an out of pocket maximum that you would have to pay (deductible + coinsurance) which needs to be paid only one time. While you can choose a $0 deductible on a comprehensive plan, we don’t recommend that since that will cost you significantly more than putting even a small deductible on the policy, but that is up to each customer’s choice and comfort level.

Should Seniors Buy Trip Cancellation Travel Insurance?

Travel medical insurance protects your health, while trip cancellation coverage is an important part of comprehensive travel insurance for seniors, protecting the money you've already paid for flights, hotels, tours, and cruises if something unexpected happens. If your trip includes significant non-refundable expenses, trip cancellation insurance can help protect your travel investment.

What Does Trip Insurance for Seniors Cover?

Trip cancellation coverage may reimburse prepaid trip expenses if you cancel for a covered reason, such as illness, injury, or a family emergency. Covered expenses can include:

Non-refundable flights

Pre-paid hotel bookings and tour deposits

Cruise fares

Cruise lines often keep 50–100% of the fare close to departure.

Non-refundable rail passes or transfers

Many travel insurance plans for seniors may also include additional benefits such as trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, and travel delay coverage, helping protect travelers from unexpected travel disruptions.

What Standard Trip Cancellation Plans Do Not Cover

  • Cancelling because you changed your mind
  • Cancelling due to a pre-existing medical condition unless a waiver is included in the policy

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Coverage for Seniors

Some travel insurance plans offer Cancel for Any Reason as an optional upgrade. CFAR coverage allows travelers to cancel their trip for reasons not normally covered under standard trip cancellation insurance.

With CFAR coverage, travelers may receive reimbursement for up to 75% of their non-refundable trip costs if they cancel for reasons such as personal concerns, family obligations, or other unexpected situations.

CFAR coverage usually:

!

Costs more than standard trip cancellation insurance

!

Must be purchased within 14 - 21 days of the initial trip deposit
