1. Student health insurance with Maternity Coverage for Dependents
questionHi,
I’m looking for maternity for my wife.

Thank you,
Madhur

questionDear Madhur,

Students and scholars on F or J visas have the best coverage for maternity coverage. However, the benefits have been reduced a few years ago such that the best coverage is 80% coverage of costs, so please be aware that you will be responsible for a portion of all costs. Also note that unless your wife is the J1 visa holder YOU will have to be the primary on the policy and she (with J2) will be secondary. Also note that prices are DIFFERENT for the primary and the spouse, so when you quote the prices, quote them for two people at the same time since the cost will be MUCH HIGHER for your wife's coverage.

There are five policies that cover maternity at an 80% coverage without a set limit on benefits. I will list them in order of their approximate cost. Note that conception has to occur after the start of the plan and most plans ask that you let them know at least three months before your delivery date.

The other student plans that we have meet the J Visa requirements and they also have maternity and pregnancy coverage but they are available only if the J1 holder is on the plan as primary. Here are the plans:

StudentSecure Insurance WorldTrips
StudentSecure Elite, Select, Smart and Budget plans also cover at 80/70% to the maximum of the plan. The Select plan can be purchased with a $300k maximum, Budget plan can be purchased with a $250k maximum and the Elite can be purchased with $500k. The Elite plan will cost $375 per month, Select about $220 and Budget about $95.
To view all information on the insurance, use below links:

Student Health Advantage Insurance WorldTrips
Student Health Advantage insurance has a $5000 maximum limit to maternity and newborn care coverage. It has a $1 million maximum and a $35 deductible and covers at 80/60%. The plan also covers pre-existing conditions with a 6 month waiting period. This plan will cost about $314 per month.

We are an agency and we work with 8 different insurance companies to give our clients as great a variety of plans as we can to get the coverage they need. Do let us know if we can assist you any further.

2. J2 Insurance options with pregnancy and maternity coverage

questionHello,
We are a family of four. The kids ages is 1.5 and 4 years. We are in New York because my husband is a post-doc at Mount Sinai. We arrived from Denmark (our homecountry) june 1 2017 on J1 and J2 visa. My husband is paid from Denmark and therefor we also have a medical insurance from Denmark.
Now we would like to have another child. Our current insurance dosen't cover pregnancies before 10 months into the program (we have been here in 5).
Can you provide us with a medical insurance thats covers medical expenses during pregnancies? I'm not pregnant yet.
Thanks,
Kathrine

questionDear Kathrine,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 visa Insurance needs!
The plans that cover pregnancy and maternity are Global plans and Student plans. Student plans satisfy the J1 Visa requirements and are available for both J1 and J2 visa holders and their dependents.

In the case where J2 visa holder alone needs insurance and J1 visa holder is covered by an insurance already, the plan that covers J2 visa holder alone as primary and provides coverage for children as dependents is:

Patriot Exchange Student Insurance IMG

The other student plans that we have meet the J Visa requirements and they also have maternity and pregnancy coverage but they are available only if the J1 holder is on the plan as primary. Here are the plans:

StudentSecure Insurance WorldTrips
This plan covers 80% within the US PPO network and Usual, reasonable, and customary charges for eligible expenses, up to the overall maximum limit out of the PPO network.

Student Health Advantage Insurance IMG
This plan covers 80% within the US PPO network and Usual, reasonable, and customary charges for eligible expenses, up to the overall maximum limit out of the PPO network.

The global plan that provides maternity coverage are

Global Medical Platinum Insurance IMG
This plan covers 80% within the US PPO network and Usual, reasonable, and customary charges for eligible expenses, up to the overall maximum limit out of the PPO network.

You are eligible to purchase this plan but this plan does not satisfy the J Visa requirements. If you are ok to buy this plan with this restriction like a general Non US citizen then you are eligible for it. Please check with your spouse and University about this.

Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

4. Maternity coverage option for J Visa holders

questionHello,
I think the plan that would suit our needs the most would be Geoblue Navigator for Student but we live in NY City right now.
However, my sister lives in Jersey City, NJ. So, do you think we could give her address to be covered by the plan? If it is mandatory that prenatal care treatment and delivery are done in the address' state, Chloe could be followed by a Gynecologist in Jersey City and deliver there. Tell us if that could work, that would be great!
If this works, I still have a few question before subscribing:
I see in the plan description that routine nursery care is covered for $750. What if the baby as a problem a few days after delivery and it cost $20,000? Would we be covered? What is included in the 'routine nursery care'?
I see in the plan description that covered maternity care expenses are:

  • Usual, reasonable and customary charges. What does it mean?
  • As our visa ends on June 30th, 2017, if Chloe doesn't get pregnant by the end of september, we would like to stop the insurance. Will it be possible?
  • What would be the cost of the "Preferred Plan"?
  • Finally, we are on J-1 and J-2 visas but I am a trainee, not a student. Will the plan work?
I am sorry for all these questions but we would like to be sure of what we do before paying unexpected expensive cost!

Thank you very much for your help.
Jean

questionDear Jean-Philippe,
Thank you for your email. The Geoblue Navigator for student plan has restriction with people purchasing the plan if they are physically located in the state of New York at the time of the purchase.
I just spoke to your wife and she told me that you are visiting your sister in New Jersey this weekend. This is perfect, you yourself can then buy the insurance plan with your New York city address since you are no longer physically" located in NY state at the time of the purchase.
On the application after you enter you NY City address, just answer "NO" to the pop up question and proceed with the application.
Please note this will not affect your coverage at all. And this plan works anywhere in the US.

Regards,
Please let us know if we can help you better.
