Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J1 Visa Insurance needs!
The policy below is an excellent option for the J visa holder and/or their dependents. The Patriot Exchange insurance plan is offered by International Medical Group (IMG) and provides comprehensive insurance for international students (F1 visa) and J1 visa scholars in the USA. It satisfies J visa and most US university requirements and is hugely popular. It is also a policy which a J2 visa holder can purchase without the J1 visa holder as the primary insured. If there is a health center available, the insured only pays a $5 copay instead of the $100 deductible. This and many other benefits make it a very economical and excellent choice for J visa holders.

J visa health insurance university requirement for minimum coverage levels

from my university they are asking for a health insurance plan that will cover the following : Minimum Coverage LevelsThe U.S. Department of State mandates minimum coverage levels that your plan must meet. IU's insurance plan exceeds these requirements by meeting provisions set forth by the U.S. Affordable Care Act.Your plan must provide coverage at levels of:$100,000 for each sickness or illness (for women this must include maternity/pregnancy care)$100,000 for each accident or injury$50,000 for medical evacuation (in case you must return to your home country for medical care)$25,000 for repatriation (in case of death, this covers the cost of returning the body to the home country)Additionally, your health insurance policy cannot have a deductible that exceeds $500 per accident or illness.
Can you please advice on what cover plans you have that would meet these requirements?

Insurance for J1 visa scholar in Nebraska-Lincoln University

I will come from Turkey to US Nebraska-Lincoln for an international study as a visiting scholar. I will come there with my family (husband and son) with a J-1 Visa and J-2 visa for my Dependents. And I will need a health insurance there.
Minimum health insurance requirements of the University for visiting scholars are as follows:
  • medical benefits of at least $100,000 per illness or accident
  • deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • medical evacuation benefit in the amount of $50,000
  • payment for repatriation of remains in the event of death in the amount of $25,000
I searched insurance services from internet and found an insurance plan named as "Atlas Travel Insurance Plan".
So before purchasing it i want to ask you whether this plan meets the requirements of the university such as *medical benefits of at least $100,000 per illness or accident?. in some web sites i read that atlas travel covers the $1000.000 for example only for per life of plan, not per illness or accident.

UCLA J1 visa insurance university requirement for deductible

After checking the brochure of Patriot Exchange that you had recommended for J1 and J2, I still have some questions. First, the deductible for this plan is $100 *per illness or injury*. But the requirement that UCLA requests is no more than $250 *per year*. Does IMG provide customized options that could meet this requirement? For example, $0 deductible per illness or injury. Second, how could I find a doctor if I were sick?
comment Ilyas
support_agentDear Ilyas,
You are correct. That plan could go over $250 deductible per year since it is a per injury/sickness deductible with no cap. If you can use your institution's health center, then it is only a $5 copay instead of a deductible which is a nice feature. You can check with your institution to see if that would be alright with them.
In terms of finding a doctor, you can use any hospital/doctor that you wish with any of the plans we offer. The companies to have networks they use and you are welcome to search them, but you are never required to use only those doctors.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

J1 and J2 visa insurance plans for Indiana University Bloomington requirements

I am Aman from India and will undertake summer research internship at university of California, santa cruz. I have been told to start the procedure for J1 visa. But I am confused about the premium for the medical insurance that i will have to pay for the period of around 2 and half months. Since I am just a student so I want to opt for the cheapest plan like 40 to 70 $ per month. Is there any minimum amount criteria for the medical insurance or I can go for the least one?
I am in need of an early response. If possible please provide me the appropriate links where I can buy the cheapest premium.

There is another comprehensive plan from WorldTrips. It is very popular for all kinds of visitors to US. It is Atlas America. This plan will cost you $147.75 for 75 days of coverage which is the time period you have stated.
This policy is very popular with international travelers and has many excellent features. In particular, their coverage of "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions up to $100,000 or the maximum of the plan (whichever is smaller) for medical expenses and an additional $25,000 for emergency medical evacuation can put your mind at ease.

J1 Visa Insurance - FAQ's

1.  Which plan is best suited for J1 and J2 Visa holder?

We have many plans that satisfy J visa requirements and work ideally for J1 and J2 Visa holders. Some of the US health insurance plans require the J1 Visa holder to be the primary applicant for the J2 visa holder to be eligible. If only the J2 visa applicant alone needs a plan we have a popular health insurance plan by international medical group (img) known as Patriot Exchange. Please find the details of this plan here:

2. Does the domestic plans cover J2 Visa holders?

While we cannot state whether or not they cover J2 Visa holders completely, they might not meet the specific J visa health insurance requirements as defined by the immigration authorities. The J2 visa eligibility and medical insurance coverage is dependent on the J1 exchange program.

3. Can a visiting foreign scholar come to the United States on a visitor's visa?

Yes, a visiting scholar can come to the US on a B-1 "visitor for business" visa. Under Certain situations a person on a B-1 visa status is permitted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) regulations to be reimbursed for expenses, and, under the amended law, can also be paid an honorarium. Visiting scholars who are going to meet all of their own expenses can also come in B-1 status. Getting a B-1 visa does not require any formal immigration document from the University.

To obtain a B-1 visa, a prospective scholar should have an invitation letter from the department with which the scholar will be affiliated, detailing the dates and activities of the contemplated visit, and indicating what if anything is to be provided in the way of reimbursements and honoraria.

4. What can happen if I do not satisfy the J visa insurance requirement?

Following are some benefits that are are covered by the international medical insurance:

The Department of State views health insurance as very, very important! The regulations require that your J program sponsor should terminate your status in the U.S. as a J visa holder if you willfully fail to comply with the J visa insurance requirement.

5. Can a J2 individual purchase insurance

Most health insurance policies available for foreign scholars requires that the J1 visa holder be the primary applicant on the insurance policy. However there is one policy offered by International Medical Group (IMG) which can be purchased only by the J2 visa dependent as long as the J1 scholar is insured by the institution sponsoring the J visa holder. This policy is the Patriot Exchange plan.

The Patriot Exchange insurance plan by IMG is very economical and with many excellent benefits. One advantage of the policy is that if the insured has access to a health center, they only pay a $5 copay (instead of the usual $100 deductible). As a copay, this is payable at every visit, however, even many visits will be cheaper than a single $100 deductible. A disadvantage to this Patriot Exchange policy is that there is no maternity coverage and no coverage for pre-existing conditions.
