As of the 9th August 2021, Canada has opened its borders to fully vaccinated US citizens and US permanent residents for discretionary or non-essential travel. To satisfy eligibility requirements, fully vaccinated US citizens and US Green card holders must have received the full dose of vaccine at least 14 days prior to entry to Canada. At present the approved vaccines by the Canadian government are - vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD and Janssen (Johnson and Johnson).
All travelers must still present a suitable quarantine plan, and be prepared to quarantine, should they not meet all of the conditions required to be exempt from quarantine.
However the entry to Canada will continue to be prohibited for US travelers who are not fully vaccinated and for all other foreign nationals unless they meet the exemption requirements under the Quarantine Act. The Canadian government intends to allow travelers from all other countries who are fully vaccinated by Canadian government approved vaccines at least 14 days prior to entry in Canada. However this decision is still pending depending on the Covid19 situation in the coming weeks.
Greetings to all our neighbors up North! The COVID-19 pandemic has really changed the shape of travel for the time being. I have recently gotten many calls from Canadians who have told me their insurance coverage from Canada is now voided since the Canadian government has now asked all Canadians to stay in Canada and avoid “non-essential” travel. Many of our Canadian friends were already out of the country and enjoying warmer climes in the US and/ or have altered their travel plans.
If you have any doubts as to your coverage, we urge to to check on your benefits with your insurance provider and know that we have alternatives should you need coverage now (even though you are already in the US) either due to cancellation or expiration of the policy.
Note that some companies cannot sell policies to Canadian citizens or to people with Canadian addresses. However, Global Underwriters, IMG and Trawick International, and INF are companies that can provide policies.
Mexico is a beautiful vibrant country with warm weather and a great deal of diversity in cultures, landscapes and activities available for tourists. The Yucatan peninsula, made famous by Cancun also has the Tulum beach which is a place to have fun in the sun. Then there is the Yellow city of Izamal , the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan, these are just some of the popular places in Mexico to experience wonderful diverse landscapes.
While this is the fun aspect of international travel, one should pay attention to make sure that they are insured in case of unexpected incidents like sickness and injuries or trip delays and loss of luggage.
While the Mexican Government does not mandate travel health insurance for tourists visiting Mexico, things have however changed dramatically due to the SARS/COV2 Covid19 pandemic. Given the fluid situation, it is prudent to buy international travel insurance for Mexico from Canada, and this is reflected in the number of international travelers buying travel health insurance which has increased three times when compared to the period before the pandemic.
Travel Health Insurance is of vital importance to get medical care for emergencies or unexpected sickness and injuries. Canadian health insurance does not provide sufficient coverage outside of Canada. Due to Covid19 pandemic another important factor to consider is quarantine benefits/lodging benefits in case you come in contact with someone who is Covid positive. Apart from these, in case you need to cancel the trip due to the pandemic or any other reason, insurance to cover the trip costs is a key requirement. Here is a list of things to consider while traveling to Mexico:
These travel health insurance plans mentioned above cover medical emergencies and unexpected sickness and injury. They have coverage for trip interruption, baggage delay and loss but there are some things that are not covered under these plans.
To bridge that gap we also offer trip cancellation insurance plans. Trip Insurance plans provide trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed flight connection...Popular Trip Insurance plans for Canadians going to Mexico are listed below:
Travel Insurance Select plan has three versions namely Basic, Plus and Elite with Elite version has comparatively more benefits compared to the other two.
Make your travel full of fun and stress free by making a suitable choice of the travel/trip health insurance plan according to your needs. Never compromise on insurance as it can end up being an expensive trip in case of unanticipated mishaps.
January, 2022: It has come to our attention that due to the Omicron surge in the US, the Canadian government is suggesting their citizens go back to Canada. If they don't do so, their insurance may no longer cover them, particularly for COVID-19. I've had many calls from such persons hoping to avoid going home soon (particularly due to the Omicron surge) and trying to find out if they can purchase a US plan to cover to the end of their planned stay in the US.
First, the good news! YES! Canadians CAN purchase visitor travel insurance policies from us to cover the remainder of their stay (as long as they like). Our US insurance companies do not care about the warning level of any countries any more. Plans that cover COVID have been written not to exclude coverage based on these levels issued by our government as well.
Note that the policies are generally renewable, so if plans change (as they so often do these days), the policies can be extended (minimum of 5 days and up to 12 months). Policies are available up to $100,000 for persons in their 70s and up to $50,000 for persons in their 80s. You can use our search engine to determine the best prices for you based on age and deductible you'd like.
The deductible on a comprehensive policy is generally a one-time payment if there are any medical expenses (doctor visit, ER visit, medications, etc). A higher deductible will give a lower premium cost, so it is a balance of what you feel you can pay out in the unlikely event you will need medical attention, and how much the policy costs you per month and day.
When you purchase the policy, you will enter your Canadian address as your "home" or "residence" address regardless of whether you own a home in the US or not. The "residence" country and the "destination" country CANNOT be the same. Then, you can choose the start date (even if it says trip start date) as the first day you need the policy. And, even though you choose an "Trip end date" you can always extend most policies without issue (just do not wait until they have expired).
Now, the bad news. Unfortunately, coverage for pre-existing conditions is really no longer an option on US visitor policies for foreign visitors. Some policies will cover "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions which should mean life-threatening emergencies due to pre-existing conditions, but they have all recently excluded chronic and congenital disorders from that coverage. As a non-medical person, I'm not sure what illnesses/disorders that leaves that WOULD be covered. The one possible exception is the Safe Travels Elite (a fixed plan) and Safe Travels Comprehensive which offers some coverage $25,000 or $15,000 for a cardiac issue.
So, there may be some risk involved with staying in the US against the recommendations of our neighbor country, but you do have some options to explore should you wish to ride out your time in the US. Compare and buy Canadian travel insurance. Hopefully, things will "calm down" and the warning level will be changed and/or you will feel safer to return home.
As ever, we wish you safe and happy travels!
Over 20 million tourists visited Canada in 2017, this was partly due to events celebrating Canada's 150th birthday. With the Canadian government declaring 2018 as ‘The Year of Tourism’ and thanks to initiatives like relaxed visa requirements, increased direct flights to Canada and greater publicity with The Lonely Planet declaring Canada as a top tourist destination, Canada hopes to increase the numberof tourists in the coming years even more. Most tourists visiting Canada are from the United States, China, Mexico, Brazil and India.
Are US citizens medical expenses covered in Canada? Does Medicare pay for US citizens visiting Canada? These are questions that we regularly receive from US travelers visiting Canada. US domestic health insurance plans provide little to no insurance cover outside the US national borders.
It is important for US visitors to Canada to buy proper travel health insurance while in Canada. We have even had instances of travelers call us from the US/Canada land border who are asked to buy proper travel insurance before entering Canada. International tourists should be aware that unlike Canadian residents who have health care cover, international tourists visiting Canada have to pay for any medical services received.
All the travel insurance plans on our website are administered by companies based in the United States, but work ideally in Canada as they are available to travelers of any nationality while traveling outside their home country. The travel health insurance plan costs are based on the age of the visitor, the duration of stay, the deductible and the medical coverage of the policy. We recommend between $100,000 to $250,000 maximum medical coverage for your stay in Canada. While costs are lower than those in the US, they are still quite high.
Review and compare the best Annual insurance.
US Citizens who have traveled overseas should get tested for COVID19 before their international flight back to the US. This COVID19 test is required even for vaccinated travelers. Testing Covid positive will force US travlers to quarantine outside the USA. In this therefore prudent for US citizens to buy travel insurance with Covid quarantine expenses included. This can be handy should the traveler be forced to stay in Quarantine as a result of a positive Covid test.
US travelers can either buy US Covid quarantine coverage trip insurance (includes coverage for cost of the trip), or Covid quarantine travel health insurance (insures only the health of the traveler and is cheaper than trip insurance).

While US citizens and residents do not need a visa to visit Canada, foreign visitors visiting Canada from many other nations need to apply for a temporary Resident Visa.
Recently a new visa known as Parents and Grand Parents Super Visa has been announced by the Canadian government. This helps Canadian citizens whose parents and grandparents (who are not Canadian citizens) want to visit Canada and stay for up to 2 years without any need to renew the status.
Canadians Citizens with a valid Canadians passport can travel to the Schengen states up to a maximum of 90 days without the need of a Schengen visa.
Requirements for traveling to the Schengen region:
Most Non Canadians citizens need to apply for the Schengen visa. Please check Nationalities who need Schengen visa. In 2022 many countries have opened their borders again for international tourism. Unfortunately, there is still the threat of the Delta and Omicron variants which have become the dominant Covid19 variants across several countries. The CDC believe both these variants to be the more contagious and may even partially evade the antibodies made by the immune system after a Covid19 infection or vaccination.
Early studies indicate that the Delta and Omicron variants infects younger people in large numbers and even vaccinated people. After a steady decline in the number of cases, the Delta and Omicron variants has resulted in an increase in cases in many US states especially in areas where the vaccination rates are low.
However all international travelers flying in to the United States, including US citizens and permanent residents are also required to have a negative COVID19 test result no more than three days before travel. Alternatively they should have documentation of recovery from COVID19 within the past 3 months before boarding an US flight.
The coronavirus pandemic has brought limitations for the travel and tourism industry. As the world is fighting back to curb the covid -19 infection ,with vaccination drives travelers have seen a good opening .However there have been several Covid 19 variants most recently the Delta and Omicron that keep evolving each time that bring about uncertainty and fear among the travelers .International travelers are more concerned about safety while traveling. Regardless of the variant the Covid19 coverage will remain the same if contracted. Travelers need to check and understand the inclusions and exclusions regarding the benefits included in the Omicron Travel Insurance cover while purchasing it.
