Canadians travel insurance - Frequently asked questions

01. Who is the best travel insurance company in Canada?

Determining the "best" travel insurance company in Canada can be subjective and may vary depending on individual preferences, needs, and specific travel plans. Several reputable insurance providers offer travel insurance in Canada, each with its own strengths and areas of expertise. Following are the popular travel insurance companies in Canada for USA: IMG, Trawick International and Global Underwriters.

02. Do I need travel insurance as a Canadian?

While travel insurance is not mandatory for Canadian citizens when traveling domestically within Canada, it is highly recommended when traveling abroad. Here are some reasons why Canadian travelers should consider purchasing travel insurance:

Medical Coverage Abroad: Provincial health insurance plans in Canada provide coverage for healthcare expenses within the country, but they may offer limited or no coverage when traveling abroad. Travel insurance can help cover the costs of unexpected medical emergencies while overseas, including doctor's visits, hospital stays, and medical evacuation.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption: Travel insurance can protect your investment in non-refundable travel expenses, such as airfare, accommodations, and tours, in case you need to cancel your trip or if your trip is interrupted due to unforeseen events like illness, injury, or emergencies.

Lost or Delayed Baggage: Travel insurance can provide reimbursement for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, helping you replace essential items while you're away.

Travel Assistance Services: Many travel insurance policies include 24/7 assistance services that can help with various travel-related issues, such as lost passports, emergency travel arrangements, and language assistance.

Coverage for Non-Medical Emergencies: Travel insurance can provide coverage for non-medical emergencies, such as trip delay, trip cancellation due to work reasons, or unexpected events like natural disasters or strikes.

Peace of Mind: Travel insurance offers peace of mind and financial protection against unexpected events that can disrupt your travel plans or lead to unexpected expenses.

Coverage for Adventure Activities: If you plan to participate in adventure sports or activities while traveling, make sure your travel insurance policy covers these activities.

Visa and Entry Requirements: Some countries may require travelers to have proof of travel insurance as part of their visa or entry requirements.

Frequent Travelers: If you travel frequently, an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy can be cost-effective and convenient.

It's important to carefully review the terms and conditions of any travel insurance policy you consider purchasing, as coverage limits, exclusions, and policy terms can vary among insurance providers and policies. Additionally, consider your specific travel plans, destination, and potential risks when selecting a travel insurance policy.

While travel insurance is not mandatory, it is a valuable tool for protecting yourself and your financial investment when traveling internationally. It's advisable to purchase travel insurance well in advance of your trip to ensure you have adequate coverage in place.

03. How much does travel insurance cost Canada?

The cost of travel insurance in Canada can vary significantly depending on various factors. These factors include:

Coverage Types: The type of coverage you choose will have a significant impact on the cost. Basic coverage for emergency medical expenses will be less expensive than comprehensive coverage that includes trip cancellation/interruption, baggage loss, and additional benefits.

Trip Duration: The length of your trip can affect the cost of travel insurance. Longer trips typically have higher premiums than shorter ones.

Age: Your age can influence the cost of travel insurance. Older travelers may pay higher premiums due to increased health risks.

Destination: The cost of travel insurance can also depend on your travel destination. Some countries or regions may have higher healthcare costs, which can affect the premium.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: If you have pre-existing medical conditions, you may need to pay a higher premium for coverage or obtain specialized coverage.

Coverage Limits: Higher coverage limits for medical expenses, trip cancellation, or other benefits will result in higher premiums.

Deductibles: Choosing a policy with a higher deductible can lower the premium, but it means you'll pay more out of pocket if you need to make a claim.

Add-Ons and Optional Coverage: Adding optional coverage like Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) or coverage for adventure activities will increase the cost of the policy.

Provider: Different insurance providers offer different pricing structures, so it's essential to obtain quotes from multiple providers to compare costs.

Number of Travelers: If you're traveling with a group or family, you can often get a discount for insuring multiple travelers under the same policy.

Frequency of Travel: If you're a frequent traveler, you may consider an annual multi-trip policy, which can be more cost-effective if you travel multiple times in a year.

To provide a general idea, here are some approximate cost ranges for travel insurance in Canada:

Emergency medical coverage: $25 to $50 CAD or more per person for a week-long trip. Comprehensive coverage (including medical, trip cancellation, baggage, etc.): $100 to $300 CAD or more per person for a week-long trip.

Annual multi-trip policies: These can range from a few hundred dollars to over $1K CAD, depending on coverage levels and the number of trips covered.

It's important to shop around, obtain quotes, and carefully read the terms and conditions of different policies to ensure that you're getting the coverage you need at a price that fits your budget. Additionally, consider factors such as the reputation of the insurance provider and the quality of customer service when choosing a policy.

04. How to choose travel insurance Canada?

Choosing the right travel insurance for your trip from Canada involves several steps and considerations to ensure you have adequate coverage that suits your needs. Here's a guide to help you choose travel insurance in Canada:

Assess Your Travel Plans: Start by assessing your specific travel plans. Consider factors such as your destination, trip duration, travel dates, and any activities or adventures you plan to undertake. These details will help determine the type of coverage you need.

Identify Your Coverage Needs:
Determine the types of coverage you require. Common types include:
Emergency Medical: Covers medical expenses, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption: Protects your investment in non-refundable trip expenses.

Baggage and Personal Belongings: Provides reimbursement for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage.

Travel Delay: Covers additional expenses during travel delays.

Emergency Assistance Services: Offers 24/7 assistance for various travel-related issues.

Adventure or Sports Coverage: If you plan to engage in adventure sports, ensure the policy covers these activities.

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR): Provides flexibility to cancel for non-covered reasons (usually available as an optional add-on).

Check Existing Coverage: Review your existing insurance policies, such as health insurance, credit card benefits, and homeowner's insurance, to determine if they offer any travel-related coverage. You may have some coverage through these existing policies.

Set a Budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend on travel insurance. Your budget will help narrow down your options and select a policy that offers the best value.

Compare Policies: Obtain quotes from multiple insurance providers to compare policies, coverage limits, premiums, and deductibles. Consider online comparison tools or consult insurance brokers for assistance.

Read Policy Terms and Conditions: Carefully read the terms and conditions of each policy you're considering. Pay attention to coverage limits, exclusions, and any optional add-ons or endorsements. Ensure the policy aligns with your coverage needs.

Check for Age Restrictions: Some policies may have age restrictions, particularly for seniors. Verify that you meet the eligibility criteria for the policy you're interested in.

Consider Pre-Existing Conditions: If you have pre-existing medical conditions, disclose them to the insurance provider and ensure that the policy covers these conditions or offers a waiver.

Understand Claim Procedures: Familiarize yourself with the claims process, including documentation requirements and contact information for claims assistance. Ensure that the provider offers a straightforward and efficient claims process.

Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to contact American Visitors Insurance with any questions or concerns you may have about coverage, terms, or policy details.

Purchase the Policy Early: Buy your travel insurance well in advance of your trip to maximize coverage benefits. Some policies require you to purchase insurance shortly after booking your trip.

Carry Proof of Insurance: While traveling, carry a copy of your travel insurance policy documents, including contact information for emergency assistance.

By following these steps and considering your specific travel needs, you can choose the travel insurance policy in Canada that provides the right coverage for your trip and offers peace of mind while you travel.

Travel medical insurance for Canadian travelers

At American Visitor Insurance, we regularly interact with thousands of Canadian international travelers needing travel health insurance for their international travel. Some of our Canadian customers want to extend their travel beyond the insurance coverage they purchased initially from Canada before leaving. It seems that to continue with a Canadian plan, you must return to Canada to make your purchase. However, with our travel health insurance for Canadian residents, you can start coverage the day your existing Canadian coverage ends and not have the expense or bother of a return trip.

Our travel insurance is particularly helpful for Canadian customers having pre-existing medical conditions, who are not able to get their Canadian travel insurance for their trip due to some constraint or another.

Travel insurance for Canadians

We do offer some plans that provide coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing medical conditions. Do review our quotes and compare them to what you are offered from your home country or keep us in mind if your travel plans change along the way!

The I-20 Visa for Canadian students in USA

The US enjoys a special relationship with Canada. Students wishing to come to a college or university in the US can obtain an I-20 visa to do so. Oftentimes, the college or institution will offer health coverage for their students. Some do not and the student must find their own policy.

01. What health insurance can Canadian students purchase?

International students cannot apply to 'regular' health care plans available to citizens. However, we have options for you through our website.

Note that if you do get the option of an institutional health plan these will likely be more expensive than what we offer, but they are very complete. They are, in fact, domestic policies not otherwise available to visitors. They are very complete and cover wellness, pre-existing conditions, maternity, mental health, and pretty much all health care needs.

If those are not main concerns and if you are looking for more economical options, there are plans for international students available.

02. What plans do you recommend for Canadian students and why?

Canadians that wish to study in the US can get health insurance through our website. The best options are those offered by IMG and Global Underwriters

The Global Underwriter plans are best if the student is on an official sports team or club. You can choose an optional collegiate sports rider to cover injuries related to that sport (low, medium, and high; unfortunately there is no coverage for football).

IMG has several student options available (Patriot Exchange, Student Health Advantage and Student Health Advantage Platinum). Patriot Exchange offers a very economical price, but note the exclusion of maternity and mental health coverage.

Student plans must be purchased for whole months. If you purchase one month and three days you will pay for two months. Therefore, you may as well sign up for two whole months. When the student returns home, the plans are terminated.
