Provider Access

What Is a PPO Network in Student Journey Platinum Insurance?

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) network is a group of doctors, hospitals, and clinics contracted to provide care at pre-negotiated, lower rates to insured students.

Inside the U.S., IMG routes Student Journey Platinum members through the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network — a tier-one network that gives students access to more doctors, clinics, and hospitals nationwide, generally at a lower cost than going out-of-network.

Because UnitedHealthcare providers offer direct billing, you typically won't need to pay large sums upfront and wait for reimbursement - the provider bills IMG directly for in-network care.

If you purchase Student Journey Platinum Insurance from IMG with a United Healtcare logo on your insurance card, please state the following when informing your healthcare provider about your IMG travel insurance - "My healthcare coverage uses the United Healthcare travel health insurance network."

local_hospital 6,797+

Lower out-of-pocket costs: Visiting an in-network provider means the provider bills IMG directly, reducing surprise bills for budget-conscious international students.

Global access: Outside the U.S. or when traveling, students also have access to IMG's proprietary IPA network of over 18,550 physicians and facilities worldwide.

Tip: When checking in at a US hospital or clinic, say: "My healthcare coverage uses the United Healthcare travel health insurance network." Always confirm PPO participation directly with the provider before your visit.

Common Questions

IMG Student Journey Platinum - FAQs

Student Journey Platinum Insurance is a medical insurance plan for students and cultural exchange participants. It has different coverage limits depending on the plan option you choose. This plan covers medical maximum of $500,000 with deductible of $250.
Yes. Student Journey Platinum covers eligible pre-existing conditions after a 6-month waiting period from the policy effective date, subject to the terms of the Certificate of Insurance.
Affordable Care Act affects the Non US students purchasing this plan. As non-resident aliens, international students, scholars and people involved in cultural exchange programs on F, J, Q, M Visas are not subject to the individual mandate for the first five years in the US. All other J categories are not subjected to the individual mandate for two years. Since international students are not subject to the mandate, they are not required to purchase a plan that meets PPACA requirements and can purchase the Student Journey Platinum.
Yes. Student Journey Platinum includes maternity coverage of $5,000 for a normal delivery and $7,500 for a C-section delivery, plus newborn care coverage up to $500.
Student Journey Platinum is IMG's highest tier of Student Journey coverage, with a $500,000 per-illness/injury limit, an unlimited overall policy maximum, unlimited emergency medical evacuation, and maternity coverage. It carries an A- (Excellent) A.M. Best financial strength rating through its underwriter, SiriusPoint Specialty Insurance Corporation. It's a strong choice for F1, J1, and M1 visa holders who want the highest coverage limits in the Student Journey series, though students on a tighter budget may prefer Student Journey Lite or Plus.
Yes. The U.S. Department of State requires J1 Exchange Visitor insurance to provide at least $100,000 in medical benefits per accident or illness, $50,000 in medical evacuation coverage, and $25,000 in repatriation of remains coverage. Student Journey Platinum provides $500,000 per illness/injury, unlimited emergency medical evacuation, and $50,000 for repatriation of remains - exceeding all three minimums.
Eligible students can purchase IMG Student Journey Medical Insurance after arriving in the United States, provided they meet the plan eligibility requirements. The insured must be physically and legally residing temporarily in the U.S. on the policy effective date.
Student Journey Platinum costs approximately $74 per month for students aged 18-24, $116 per month for ages 25-30, and $293 per month for ages 31-40, based on the $500,000 plan maximum with a $250 deductible. Exact pricing depends on age, coverage duration, and any dependents added.
Student Journey Platinum has a $250 deductible per period of coverage for in-network care, and $400 for out-of-network care. The student health center copay is $15 per visit.
Student Journey Platinum is designed for non-U.S. individuals on F1, J1, or M1 visas who are actively enrolled in a full course of study. Since eligibility can vary once a student moves to Optional Practical Training, it's best to confirm current eligibility with an American Visitor Insurance agent before applying - some student-specific plans limit enrollment to actively enrolled students.
Student Journey Platinum is not an ACA-compliant plan, but it does not need to be. Non-resident international students on F, J, M, or Q visas are exempt from the ACA individual mandate for their first five years in the U.S. (two years for other J categories), so Student Journey Platinum meets their insurance needs without ACA compliance being required.
Yes, COVID-19 is treated the same as any other covered illness under the plan's standard benefits and deductible.
Student Journey Platinum can be purchased for a minimum of 30 days up to a maximum of 12 continuous months per term. To continue coverage beyond your current term, you apply for a new term before the existing one expires, provided you still meet the plan's eligibility requirements.
Yes. Eligible dependents - such as a spouse or child residing with the primary insured outside their home country - can be added to a Student Journey Platinum application as covered dependents.
