What Is Student Journey Medical Insurance?

IMG's Student Journey international student health insurance is designed for non-U.S. citizens coming to the United States (or its territories) on F1, F2, J1, J2 or M1 visas. Many U.S. colleges and universities require international students to carry health insurance before they can enroll or apply for a visa - some schools mandate their own group plan, while others allow students to provide comparable outside coverage.

IMG offers flexibility, ensuring you can access the right benefits at the right cost. The Student Journey Medical Insurance provides a comprehensive range of essential benefits designed to meet both the medical and budgetary needs of all students. Student Journey Insurance plan has three optionss:

What Should You Check Before Buying Student Insurance?

Not every "comprehensive student insurance" plan checks these boxes. Here's how Student Journey Lite, Plus and Platinum - a trusted international student health insurance option - stack up against what actually matters for F1, J1 and M1 visa students.

check
Does it meet my visa and university insurance requirement?
All three Student Journey plans are built to meet U.S. J1 visa requirements and most university insurance requirements for F1 and M1 students - but always confirm against your specific school's minimum insurance policy before buying.
check
Can I actually find a doctor near campus?
Every student medical insurance plan in the Student Journey lineup runs on the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network, one of the largest provider networks in the U.S., plus IMG's global IPA network of 18,550+ providers when traveling outside the U.S.
check
What do I pay before coverage kicks in?
Deductibles range from $100 per injury/illness on Lite, to $500 in-network / $750 out-of-network on Plus, to $250 in-network / $400 out-of-network on Platinum - with student health center copays as low as $15 on Platinum, $25 on Plus and $45 on Lite.
check
Is mental health and telehealth support included?
24/7 telehealth plus outpatient mental/nervous health coverage is included across all three plans - built to support international students adjusting to life away from home.
check
What happens if I have a pre-existing condition?
Pre-existing conditions are covered after a 6-month waiting period on every Student Journey plan - know this upfront rather than discovering it at claim time.
check
How much will this student insurance actually cost me monthly?
Pricing is broken down by the month rather than buried in a lump annual figure, so you can pick the coverage level - Lite, Plus or Platinum - that fits your budget for affordable student health insurance.

United Healthcare Provider Network

Tip: When checking in at a US hospital or clinic, say: "My healthcare coverage uses the United Healthcare travel health insurance network." Always confirm PPO participation directly with the provider before your visit.

Yes. IMG Student Journey insurance covers eligible pre-existing conditions after a 6-month waiting period, subject to plan terms and eligibility requirements.
Non-resident international students, scholars and exchange visitors on F, J, M or Q visas are generally exempt from the ACA individual mandate during their first five years in the U.S. (two years for most other J categories). Since Student Journey students are not subject to the mandate, they aren't required to purchase ACA-compliant coverage and can choose a Student Journey plan instead.
Yes. Maternity is covered up to $5,000 for a normal delivery or $7,500 for a c-section, with newborn care covered up to a $500 maximum, across all three plan levels.
Yes, as an optional rider available up to age 65. The Adventure Sports Rider covers activities such as skydiving, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, paragliding, zip lining and similar sports, with limits between $15,000 and $50,000 depending on age.
Student Journey Lite is one of the most budget-friendly options for students under 25, starting around $30/month with a $150,000 medical maximum. Student Journey Plus and Platinum offer higher coverage ($300,000 and $500,000) at a modest premium increase for students who want broader protection.
Student Journey plans use the UnitedHealthcare Options network within the U.S., giving members access to over 1.4 million physicians, 6,797+ hospitals, 45,000+ clinics and 67,000+ pharmacies nationwide.
Yes. Eligible insureds can request renewal from 30 days up to 12 continuous months in advance, as long as premiums are paid on time and eligibility requirements continue to be met. Coverage is re-applied for rather than automatically renewed.
Not necessarily. Some universities require their own group health plan, but many allow students to waive it and provide comparable outside coverage instead. Student Journey is designed to meet U.S. J1 visa requirements and most university insurance requirements for F1 and M1 students - always confirm with your school's international student office before purchasing.
Claims documentation can be mailed to International Medical Group, PO Box 240429, Apple Valley, MN 55124, USA, or submitted online through the MyIMG member portal. Claims must be filed within 90 days of the date the expense was incurred.
