I called doctors from the PPO network list but they said they don't recognize my plan. Why?

This is more common than people realize, and it doesn't necessarily mean your plan is invalid. PPO networks used by travel insurance plans are often third-party networks that individual doctors may not be familiar with at the front desk. A few things to know:

  • Ask the provider to verify by calling the network directly using the number on your insurance card, rather than looking it up themselves.
  • Some providers participate in the network but their billing staff may not recognize the plan by name.
  • If a provider is truly out of network, you can still receive treatment you will just pay a higher out-of-pocket share and seek reimbursement afterward.

Which doctors and hospitals can I visit while traveling in the Schengen area?

Most travel medical insurance plans for Schengen travel allow you to visit any licensed doctor, clinic, or hospital within the Schengen zone.

  • You can usually choose your provider freely
  • In emergencies, go to the nearest hospital immediately
  • You may need to pay upfront and request reimbursement, depending on the provider

The hospital billed the insurance company directly do I still need to submit a claim form?

It depends on the insurer and the plan. Even when a provider bills the insurance company directly, many insurers still require you to submit a completed claim form along with an itemized bill and any relevant medical records. This helps the insurer verify the treatment, confirm it's a covered expense, and process the payment accurately.

Not submitting a claim form when required can delay or complicate the payment process. When in doubt, submit the form anyway it's a simple step that protects you. Contact American Visitors Insurance if you're unsure what documentation your specific plan requires.
