International travel insurance for seniors with Medicare

Travel insurance for seniors with Medicare is very important especially when traveling internationally. While Medicare provides coverage within the United States and its territories, it typically does not cover medical expenses incurred outside the country. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. Check Medicare Coverage Abroad: Before purchasing overseas travel insurance, seniors should check their Medicare coverage to understand what, if any, coverage is provided for international travel. In most cases, Medicare does not cover medical expenses incurred outside US borders
  2. Consider a Travel Insurance Plan: Seniors should explore the best seniors travel insurance plans available on American Visitor Insurance that cater to their specific needs. Look for plans that offer coverage for emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, and other travel-related issues..
  3. Medigap or Medicare Supplement Plans: Some seniors may have Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans that offer limited coverage for emergency medical care during foreign travel. However, this coverage is quite limited, and seniors may still need additional travel insurance for comprehensive protection.
  4. Medical Evacuation Coverage: Seniors should consider whether the travel insurance policy includes coverage for medical evacuation, which can be crucial in emergencies where specialized medical transportation is required.
  5. Compare Quotes: It's essential to compare quotes from the best US travel insurance providers to find a plan that offers the desired coverage at a reasonable cost. Online comparison tools at American Visitor Insurance can be helpful in this process.

In summary, before making a decision, seniors should understand their existing Medicare coverage,. They should then compare different senior citizen travel insurance options on American Visitor Insurance and carefully review the terms of any international travel insurance to ensure they have adequate protection during their travels.

International travel insurance tips for senior citizens

Why should I buy travel insurance for US seniors?

Should Seniors buy trip cancellation insurance?

Trip cancellation insurance is very important for seniors as it provides protection for the non-refundable cost of the trip as well as the health of the US senior citizens. The non-refundable expenses includes cost of hotel bookings, air tickets, rail and cruise ticket expenses ... Travel protection insurance for seniors can also include coverage for sports equipment like Golf or Ski equipment and car rental, however these are sometime add-on benefits and not part of the basic plan. Travel insurance for seniors include protection from unexpected expenses such as damaged, stolen, lost or delayed baggage.

US seniors find Trip cancellation insurance very useful for expensive vacations, especially if it involves international travel. Some cruise insurance protection offered by cruise lines provides very little benefits given their cost, this is particularly important for Seniors cruise vacationers who are most vulnerable and likely to need the benefits offered by the best senior cruise travel insurance plans. US domestic health insurance plans will not offer coverage for trip expenses and health of the traveler when they are outside US borders. US seniors can compare and buy trip cancellation coverage.

Is it worth buying trip insurance with cancel for any reason?

While some US seniors travel insurance plans require that the trip is cancelled for an approved reason other plans are available with 'cancel for any reason' benefit. However one must buy the 'cancel for any reason' as an add on option. There are different reasons why one would cancel their trip. Trip cancellation insurance has a list of legitimate reasons for cancelling a trip which are covered under the trip cancellation benefit. The Cancel for any reason benefit is an add-on benefit and would offer coverage for canceling the journey for any reason and it will refund up to 75% of the non-refundable trip expenses.

Do US seniors with Medicare need travel insurance?

Many US Seniors who are retirees travel around the world on holidays. Most US seniors have Medicare and since Medicare is an US federal health insurance program for senior citizens over 65 years, it will not offer medical coverage outside the US except when they are on cruise with the waters connecting the US states. International travel insurance for Medicare recipients is important and US senior citizens must be well informed about the international travel insurance coverage limitations of Medicare while outside the US. US seniors who rely on Medicare and travel internationally should buy supplemental travel medical insurance.

How do you handle international travel medical insurance for pre-existing chronic conditions?

Visitor travel health insurance plans never cover regular, required medical care for a chronic condition. For example, if a traveler takes medication regularly or requires treatment like dialysis, those things will have to be paid for out of pocket by the traveler and should be calculated into the cost of their trip. If medications are lost or stolen and need to be replace, that will require a doctor visit to get a prescription and then the purchase at the pharmacy all of which would have to be paid for by the insured. If the concern is for a sudden, unexpected flare up with a chronic, pre-existing condition, then there are a few plans which will cover that, but they are quite expensive and must be purchased for at least 90 days. Note also, that those plans also must be purchased BEFORE the travel begins and cover only travel to the US (some include Canada and Mexico).
On the other hand, trip cancellation plans, available to US residents only, often do include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as (1) the person has coverage in their home country and (2) certain other requirements are met which vary by company and policy.

Is $100,000 enough for travel insurance?

It depends. It depends primarily on where you are traveling to. For travel to Europe, some are required to purchase travel health insurance and many European countries only require $50,000, so that should be enough for travel to those countries. In other countries, like the US, Canada, and Japan costs are rising and one may want a higher amount of coverage if traveling there. The amount that is available for purchase depends on the age of the traveler, so the choice of maximum should be made depending on availability and destination of the traveler.

Does travel insurance cover 100% of expenses?

Typically not. First of all, travel insurance is only for unexpected medical illness or injury. There are many medical expenses which may be desired (teeth cleaning or check, wellness check, immunization) which will not be covered. We sell two types of policies: fixed and comprehensive plans. The fixed plans have limited coverage to a set amount or cap. If you are charged more than the policy allows for a specific medical expense, then you will have to pay the difference. A comprehensive plan is more complete, but there is a deductible that must be paid before the insurance pays out any amount and often there is coinsurance to pay after, although this is usually limited to 20% of the first $5000. So, with a comprehensive plan, you can calculate an out of pocket maximum that you would have to pay (deductible + coinsurance) which needs to be paid only one time. While you can choose a $0 deductible on a comprehensive plan, we don’t recommend that since that will cost you significantly more than putting even a small deductible on the policy, but that is up to each customer’s choice and comfort level.
