Greetings Travelers! I get asked rather frequently if a travel medical insurance plan can be extended or changed. Sometimes, visitors purchase plans before they have their plane tickets due to visa issues or to meet other requirements. Sometimes, plans just change. After all, isn't that one of the exciting things about travel? You never quite know how it will work out and what you might find on your journey. Never fear! Most travel medical policies are easily changed, extended, or cancelled!

The cancellation policy of all travel plans (except for Diplomat America and Diplomat LongTerm) is that before the start date of the plan, you can cancel for a full refund. You must cancel your policy in writing to the insurance company, but they accept your cancellation notice by email, so this is quickly accomplished. If you don't know where to send your cancellation request, you can call us and we will tell you! The Diplomat America and Diplomat LongTerm plans will allow a cancellation only before the start date, but they will subtract a $25 cancellation fee from your refund.

After a policy starts, you can get a pro-rated refund from most policies IF there has not been any claim made against the policy. If a claim is made, no refund is allowed. If not, most policies issue a prorated refund minus a cancellation fee. The cancellation fee is usually $25. However, note that for policies from IMG, the cancellation fee is $50 and they only refund whole months (no partial months). Also, note that this may take some time since they have to check for claims and then once they issue the refund the credit cards generally take a few days to post your refund to your account, so please allow 5-10 business days for any cancellation to be finalized.

The only plan that is not extendable is the Diplomat America plan. It must be purchased for at least 15 days and cannot be extended. The Diplomat LongTerm can be extended should you be interested in these plans (they offer very good coverage for amateur sports team coverage up to collegiate level and some extreme sports coverage). Other plans are extendable for an additional $5 (additional to the premium) usually for a minimum of 5 days.
That allows you a great deal of flexibility if you are traveling with open tickets and changeable plans.

Note that most trip cancellation plans are NOT renewable nor refundable (after an initial 10 day "free-look" period). There are some exceptions, so should you need this coverage, please call us and we can see what can be done (after all, things happen often beyond our control).

We hope your trip planning and preparation is simple and not stressful. Know that you have lots of options for insurance and plans are changeable, so you can make your purchase worry-free! Hopefully, your plans go without a hitch. We wish you clear skies and happy traveling!
