Insurance for J2 Visa serving as secondary insurance

I am on J2 Visa. I needed an insurance plan for myself which is just the J2 and I want to know if I can use this insurance as the secondary plan after having my University's plan as the primary? Do these plans cover maternity and pregnancy?

support_agentDear Customer
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Here are the links for the policy we spoke about over the phone: The plan that is available for just the J2 visa without the J1 visa being on the plan: The Patriot Exchange insurance plan is offered by International Medical Group (IMG) and provides comprehensive insurance for international students (F1 visa) and J1 visa scholars in the USA. It satisfies J visa and most US university requirements and is hugely popular. It is also a policy which a J2 visa holder can purchase without the J1 visa holder as the primary insured. If there is a health center available, the insured only pays a $5 copay instead of the $100 deductible. This and many other benefits make it a very economical and excellent choice for J visa holders. The details of the plans are available on our site at the below link:
Patriot Exchange:
There is another plan Student Health Advantage Platinum that covers pregnancy. This plan needs the J1 to be the primary insured and the J2 to be the secondary insured on the same plan. This plan covers maternity and pregnancy after some waiting period. To get quote and BUY this plan, please visit the below link:

  • Can I buy the policy for $50,000, or should I buy $100,000?

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Here are the answers to your questions.
  • I am trying to purchase the Patriot Exchange plan, will that plan work for me?
Answer: Yes, this plan will work well for you. This is the one student insurance plan which is available to J2 visa holder even if the J1 visa holder has purchased a different insurance policy.
  • Can I buy the policy for $50,000, or should I buy $100,000?
Answer: The J visa insurance requirement mandated by the US immigration authorities insist on a minimum coverage of $100,000. This is true for both J1 and J2 visa holders, hence you have to buy a policy with a minimum of $100,000 to satisfy J visa regulation.
  • I will be buying the policy for one year. However, if my wife returns to my country before the end of one year, can I get a refund on this policy.
Answer: Yes, you will get a pro rata refund for the unused period of the insurance plan.

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. We sell insurance for visitors to the US and specifically for the J visa (J1 and J2); however, since your wife is already pregnant, no insurance will cover the wellness checks and birth of the child. We can help you find insurance to meet the visa requirements, bot that aspect of care will not be covered.
There is one plan we sell that covers complications of pregnancy in the first 26 weeks of gestation only. Obviously, it is insurance you hope you do not need. It also satisfies the J requirements (buy at least a $100,000 maximum plan; I recommend higher). I will put the information links for it below in case you are interested in it:

Insurance Coverage for maternity and child delivery

I'm a j1 phd student. I'm trying to find the best insurance insurance option for my wife (j2 visa) which also cover maternity (from pregnancy to child delivery), at a reasonable price. We are both italian citizens and we are both already in the us. I was looking at the Student Health Advantage plan and was wondering how much would it cost. I need insurance only for J2.

Student Health Advantage is not suitable for your situation as you need insurance for only J2 and J1 is already covered.
We have a plan that is available only for J2 but this plan does not cover maternity and child delivery. You can opt for the global plans in IMG that will cover maternity and child birth.
Here are the details:
Global Medical Silver

This plan is a long-term, fixed benefit medical insurance plan that may be renewed yearly. The plan provides Non-US citizens and US expatriates with excellent coverage outside their home country with a lifetime policy limit of $5,000,000.

Global Medical Gold

This Insurance plan is a long-term, comprehensive benefit insurance plan designed for a traveler seeking major medical coverage for a limited amount of time. The plan provides comprehensive benefits for the initial three years of coverage after which some benefits are reduced. The plan has a lifetime policy limit of $5,000,000. If you are not concerned about maternity and child birth, then we have a popular plan for J2 Visa holders only:

J2 visa medical coverage for child below 10 years

I am a J1 visa holder, who got the A.S.P.E. health insurance and I would like to get insurance for my daughter (7 year-old) for the whole period and for my husband (41 years old) - starting with 3 months and then with add-on. However, I am not sure if I meet your following criteria "J2: applicant is only eligible for this plan if the J1 visa holder has purchased a plan through his or her education or cultural program". Do u have any other suggestion ?I'd like to Know more about having children for free.

Could you please clear that up, considering I have A.S.P.E.?
commentAna
support_agentDear Ana
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. I am guessing that as a J1 visa holder, you have medical coverage through your institution. If that is the case, then you can purchase the Patriot Exchange by IMG. Please note that you will not be able to change anything with the coverage such as "add on"
Patriot Exchange
If you are purchasing the policy for different dates for your husband and child then in your case you are going to have to purchase separate policies for your husband and child (so no one will be free) since they have different travel dates. The best policy is probably the Patriot Exchange with no coinsurance payment (Atlas has a 20% coinsurance outside their PPO network - that is a group of hospitals/doctors they work with - or 0% in their network). It's up to you which you think will be best. The Atlas plan can be purchased for however many days you need while the Patriot Exchange must be purchased for whole months only.
Here is our information on the Atlas plan from WorldTrips for your reference:

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Patriot Exchange plan from IMG is best suitable and is only plan that provides coverage for J2 visa alone when J1 visa has coverage available already from the University. The plan cannot be purchased while physically in Maryland, but the plan does provide coverage in Maryland and anywhere outside your home country. To buy this plan, you should buy it while outside Maryland and use your Non US mailing and billing address.

J2 visa insurance satisfying the latest visa requirements

I am a visiting scholar of the Dept Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, North Carolina State University from 18 June to 17 Sep 2015. Since I already have insurance to cover the J1 enquiry in Taiwan, I wonder if I can buy one for my son of ten years old alone who holds a J2 visa. The enquiry of the Department of State on health insurance is as following, Effective May 15, 2015, minimum coverage amounts are US$100,000 per accident or illness; US$50,000 provision for medical evacuation; and US$25,000 maximum repatriation coverage, with a US$500 maximum deductible.

Health insurance satisfying J2 visa insurance requirements

So I am going to the US for 1 year with my spouse. My insurance is covered within my program but we need to purchase an insurance for him as well for the J2 visa application. Can we do that with you?

I was looking into this Patriot Exchange option. I saw that it has all the minimum requirements but the application also mentions this:

The policy must, at minimum, be underwritten by an insurance corporation having at least one of the following:

A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-" or above Standard & Poor's claims-paying ability rating of "A-" or above Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or above and I didn't find anything about it. Can you please help me with this?

Buying J2 visa insurance separately

I am a J1 scholar and my institution is covering my medical insurance while I’m in the US. However, my spouse and child will be here with me and I need insurance for them. Can a J2 individual purchase insurance?

commentCustomer
support_agentDear Customer
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. This is a relatively common situation for individuals with some institutions. Usually, the J1 scholar must be the primary insured on most policies. However, the Patriot Exchange plan offered by International Medical Group (IMG) will allow for the J2 spouse and/or dependents to purchase insurance under these circumstances. The Patriot Exchange is a very economical policy with many good benefits which I often recommend even to J1 scholars.
One advantage of the policy is that if the insured has access to a health center, they only pay a $5 copay (instead of the usual $100 deductible). As a copay, this is payable at EACH visit, however, even several visits will be cheaper than the $100 deductible. A disadvantage to the policy is that there is no maternity coverage and no coverage for pre-existing conditions. For a complete information on the policy, including brochure and pricing, please check these links.

What are the J2 Visa Health Insurance Requirements?

J2 visa holders, who are dependents (spouses and children) of J1 visa holders, are required by U.S. federal law to maintain health insurance throughout their stay in the United States. The U.S. Department of State mandates that J2 health insurance meets specific minimum coverage requirements to ensure adequate protection.

If you elect to satisfy the insurance requirement through a policy issued in your home country, the policy must be backed by the full faith and credit of your government. • Valid Passport and Visa: J2 visa holders must maintain a valid passport and valid J2 visa to stay in the U.S.
  • DS-2019 Form: They need their own DS-2019 form, which is the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J1) Status.
  • Duration of Stay: J2 visa holders can stay in the U.S. as long as the J1 visa holder remains in valid status, as their stay is tied to the J1 program's duration.
  • Traveling to the U.S.: They can enter and leave the U.S. during the validity of their visa but must ensure their visa stamp is valid for re-entry.
  • Travel to Other Countries: J2 visa holders can travel internationally but need a valid J2 visa for re-entry to the U.S. They should check U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) guidelines for any entry requirements.
  • I-94 Record: Ensure that the I-94 record is updated with every entry to the U.S. to maintain lawful status.

J2 visa exchange visitor insurance FAQ’s

1. Why buy health insurance for J2 visa holders?

Since J2 visa holders accompany J1 visa holders, the J2 visa insurance is quite taken care by the sponsoring institution which is covering the J1 visa holders insurance as well. However, there are situations where the sponsoring institution will cover only the mandated insurance cover for the J1 visa holder, or in some instances the institution might insist that the J visa holder buy the J visa insurance as mandated by the US authorities. In this situation, the J2 visa holder will need to buy insurance as specified by the US consulates to satisfy J visa insurance requirements.

The affordable care act (ACA) popularly known as Obamacare makes it mandatory for all US residents to have health insurace. Of course, along with buying health insurance because it is mandated by the US authorities, it is always wise to have proper health insurance in the United States. Health care is very expensive and being uninsured and forced to visit an US hospital can be disastrous. The US authorities by insisting on J2 insurance are ensuring the financial wellbeing of the J1 and J2 visa holder who is new in the US and unaware about the health care costs in this country.

Here we work with reputed insurance providers to give you the complete choice of health insurance which satisfy J1 and J2 visa insurance requirements. You can compare these J2 visa health insurance plans and buy the J2 insurance that best suits your needs.

2. What will be the health insurance cost for J2 visa dependents in USA?

The US immigration authorities have clearly defined the J2 visa insurance requirements. The J2 visa exchange visitor insurance price will depend mainly on the age of the J2 visa holder. The older the J2 visa holder, the higher will be the J2 insurance cost. Customers can compare aca J2 visa insurance plans and buy the best health insurance for J2 visa holders according to their needs.

3. What are the benefits of J2 health insurance?

The J-2 visa allows the spouses and unmarried children under 21 of J-1 visa holders to reside in the U.S. during the J-1 visa holder's stay. J-2 visa holders can apply for work authorization, pursue academic opportunities, and travel in and out of the U.S. with a valid visa. These benefits provide a comprehensive support system for families, enabling them to live, work, and study together while in the U.S.

4. Can I opt out of the J2 insurance requirements?

In some cases, if you can demonstrate that you have equivalent coverage through your own means, you might be able to request a waiver for the J2 health insurance requirements. However, this is subject to approval and specific regulations of the sponsoring exchange program or institution.

5. Do J-2 visa holders need health insurance?

Yes, like J1 visa holders, J-2 visa holders are also required to have health insurance while in the United States. This requirement is to ensure that dependents have access to medical care and to prevent any financial burden on the U.S. healthcare system.

6. What type of health insurance is acceptable for J-2 visa holders?

J-2 visa holders must have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of State. This J2 visa insurance is similar to J1 visa insurance and should provide coverage for medical emergencies, doctor visits, hospital stays, and repatriation of remains. It should also have a minimum coverage amount per accident or illness (usually around $100,000).

Here we work with reputed insurance providers to give you the complete choice of health insurance which satisfy J1 and J2 visa insurance requirements. You can compare these J2 visa health insurance plans and buy the J2 insurance that best suits your needs.
