Health insurance is not mandatory for H4 visa holders. However, it is highly recommended due to the high cost of healthcare in the United States. Since H4 visa holders often rely on their H1B sponsor for family coverage, they may receive health insurance through the employer-sponsored plan of the H1B visa holder. If such coverage is not available, H4 holders can purchase individual or family plans through the private insurers to ensure financial protection against medical emergencies and healthcare expenses.
Thanks for your inquiry with American Visitor Insurance!
Here are the plans that are best suited for you:
This is the travel health insurance plan that can be used for the short term until you get your domestic insurance.Thank you for your email regarding insurance for coverage in the US! As an H1B visa holder, you are eligible for any of the visitor plans that we offer. The main issue with this visa is that if you have been in the country longer than about 6 months (depending on your age) you will be ineligible to buy some plans even if you were previously covered by an employee plan. The last time you came into the country is what "counts" even if you had previously been in the US longer. The same is true for a spouse and kids of the H1B visa holder, if you are only purchasing for them (note you CAN purchase only for your family if you have your own coverage, just know that domestic coverage is more complete and desirable if there could be maternity or pre-existing medical condition coverage required). For the state of Washington, we have some state specific limitations to purchase some of the insurance plans that we normally recommend for H1 Visa holders. Here is one plan that does not have state limitations.
