Student insurance for sports coverage is a type of health insurance that provides specific coverage for injuries sustained while participating in organized sports or athletic activities. It is designed to protect students from the financial burden of medical expenses resulting from sports-related injuries.
International students participating in sports should consider obtaining sports insurance to protect against injuries sustained during athletic activities. Many international student sports insurance plans offer coverage for organized sports, including intercollegiate, intramural, and club sports. Individual student-athlete insurance typically offers coverage for recreational, fitness, and organized sports. However, extreme or high-contact sports may require additional riders or may not be covered at all.
Student sports insurance for international students cover medical emergencies arising during the participation in sports activities. Students who are looking for sports health insurance coverage can compare and buy sports insurance for students at American Visitor Insurance. Obtaining health insurance for student athletes is an essential for international students engaged in athletic activities, ensuring they are financially protected against potential injuries.
It’s that time again when the school year is starting to kick in for kids and young adults all across the USA! I am getting regular requests for insurance for international students that will include coverage for participation in a team sport. We do have some options for these individuals, so I thought I could lay some of them out here.
One of the best international sports student insurance is the Diplomat America or the Diplomat LongTerm Insurance plans offered by Global Underwriters. These plans have a collegiate sports rider in which you choose “Low”, “Middle” and “High” option depending on your sport. The main difference is the LongTerm plan allows you to extend the policy and it also allows up to 90 day trips back to your home country (per year).
The Diplomat America only allows 14 days of travel back to the home country (after which the policy will expire). The sports covered are: (1) Low Option - additional $34 flat monthly rate: Ballet; Baseball; Cheerleading; Cross Country; Diving; Equestrian; Fencing; Field Hockey; Golf; Polo (Horse); Polo (Water); Rowing; Softball; Surfing; Swimming; Tennis; Track & Field; Volleyball. (2) Middle Option - additional $48 flat monthly rate: Basketball; Competitive Cycling (Road, Track, CX); Ice Hockey; Inline Skating (Helmet & Proper Equipment Required); Lacrosse; Martial Arts/Karate; Modern Pentathlon; Skiing (Slalom, Giant Slalom, Downhill); Ski Jumping; Wrestling. (3) High Option - additional $102 flat monthly rate: Football (No Division One); Gymnastics; Rugby (No Division One); Soccer. This plan will cost about $87 per month for a 21 year old (without the athletic sports rider).
Another high school sports insurance for international students option is the Patriot Exchange insurance offered by IMG. It is much more economical than the Diplomat America plan, however, it does NOT include varsity sports teams regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) nor the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). You only get this coverage if you choose the “Add-on” Rider (NOT the Adventure Sports Rider). This plan can also be used to cover high school sports team participation and can be a good fit for many student athletes. Coverage of $250,000 maximum with a $100 deductible starts at $73 per month for a young adult (without the add-on; +$7 with the add-on).
There are a few other student plans that include coverage for student athletes on club teams and sports teams, but they limit coverage to $5000 or less, such as the Navigator for Student (by GeoBlue), StudentSecure Select plans (by WorldTrips), and Student Health Advantage plans (by IMG).
If you have questions about these plans or other situations for your student, please do not hesitate to call our friendly staff so we can advise you and guide you to the best choice for your student. Happy studying!
International students can buy either the Diplomat America Insurance or Diplomat LongTerm Insurance insurance if they intend to play on intercollegiate sports or club teams. These policies allow you to put a specific sports rider on the policy (low, medium, or high) depending on the sport to be covered. Under this enhancement, the maximum benefit pay out is reduced to $20,000 for any covered injury or illness resulting from the sports activity. The cost depends on the sport to be covered.
Sports is an integral part of a student's experience, promoting physical health and teamwork. To safeguard students participating in sports activities, our international student athlete health insurance plans offer dedicated coverage benefits.

Any student who actively participates in organized sports or athletic activities, whether at school or in extracurricular programs, should consider getting this type of insurance. It offers essential protection for sports-related injuries that may occur during their activities.
Sports coverage typically covers medical expenses related to injuries sustained during covered sports activities. This includes doctor visits, hospitalization, surgical procedures, rehabilitation, and other necessary treatments.
Insurance policies may have limitations on the types of sports covered, as some activities are considered riskier than others. High-contact or extreme sports may be excluded or require additional coverage. It's essential to review the policy documents to understand which sports are covered and any exclusions that may apply.
Coverage for pre-existing sports injuries may vary depending on the insurance provider and policy. Some policies may offer limited or no coverage for pre-existing injuries, while others may provide partial or full coverage after a waiting period. Review the policy details to understand coverage for pre-existing sports injuries.
Coverage for sports-related concussions may be included in the policy, but it's essential to check the specific terms. Some policies may cover concussion evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation, while others may have limitations or require additional coverage.
Waiting periods are common in insurance policies, including those for sports coverage. A waiting period is a specified time during which the insurance coverage for certain injuries may not apply. Check with the insurance provider to determine if there is a waiting period and how long it lasts.
Insurance plans often have a network of preferred providers, including healthcare professionals with expertise in sports medicine. Students can typically choose from these in-network providers to receive maximum benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs.
The duration of coverage for student insurance for sports coverage typically aligns with the policy's effective dates. Coverage begins on the policy's start date and ends on the policy's expiration date, as specified in the insurance contract.
