Travel to Europe

Europe has plenty to offer catering to every type of tourist interest. Be it adventure sports, to archaeology, from snow covered mountains to warm wonderful sea coasts, from theatres and operas to wine tasting and diverse culinary traditions, Europe has something for everyone. Along with its rich history and culture, Europe also has the advantage of being well located from many parts of the globe, be it from the Americas, Africa or Asia. All of this makes Europe the most visited destination globally. However while applying for the common Schengen visa to travel to 26 European nations, the Schengen visa application should be accompanied by a Schengen visa insurance letter which satisfies clearly defined Schengen visa insurance requirements. We have several travel health insurance plans for global visitors that satisfy Schengen visa requirements listed below:
  • Medical coverage of at least €30,000 (about $50,000 USD)
  • A repatriation benefit.
  • An emergency medical evacuation benefit.
  • The insurance provider must have an office in Europe.

Long term Europe Visa Insurance
US citizens and other visa exempted countries who want to stay in any of the 26 Schengen countries for more than 90 days in a 180 day period need a Long Stay Visa. One of the requirements for this visa is proof of medical insurance with medical expenses coverage up to 30,000 Euro (or the equivalent in US dollars) which is valid during the whole stay in the Schengen countries. The insurance company should provide a visa letter stating coverage amounts for medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation while in Europe (or 'unlimited' if there is no limit of coverage).

Factors determining the travel health insurance for schengen visa cost

The monthly premium or cost of the Schengen Visa insurance plan depends on the following:
  1. The age of the traveler: The older the Schengen visa holder, the more expensive the monthly plan cost
  2. The maximum medical coverage selected: The options range from $50,000, up to $1,000,000, the higher the coverage amount, the higher the premium.
  3. The selected deductible: A 'deductible' is the amount of the medical costs the customer pays before the insurance plan provides any coverage. Most plans provide several options ranging form $0 to $2500 (travelers over age 60 years may not have the $0 deductible option). The lower the deductible, the higher the premium.
  4. The co-insurance on the plan: 'Co-insurance' is the percentage on medical expenses borne by the customer AFTER the deductible is paid.
  5. The insurance underwriter: There are different underwriters such as AIG, Lloyds, Nationwide, etc. Premium will vary for different underwriter.

Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

For those travelers who need a Schengen visa to travel to Europe, travel insurance is mandatory while applying for the Europe visa (Schengen visa). If you are a US citizen or have a nationality that does not need the Schengen visa, then travel insurance to Europe is not necessary. However travel insurance for Europe from USA is mandatory if you want a long term stay (over 90 days) in Europe. Also, given the high cost of health care in Europe and the fact that US domestic health insurance provides little coverage in Europe, and the relatively low cost of travel insurance for Europe, it is important for international travelers to buy good travel insurance for visiting Europe.

Which is the best travel insurance for Europe?

We have four companies that we recommend for Europe travel, specifically if you need a letter in order to get your travel to Europe visa (Schengen visa). The price will depend on the age(s) of the travelers and the length of travel insurance coverage. We have developed a Europe travel insurance comparison tool which lists eligible plans based on price and benefits to help Europe travelers choose the plan that is most economical and appropriate for their needs. Compare and buy Europe travel insurance for Schengen visa.
