Importance of American traveler insurance

The Covid pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inclement weather and acute labor shortages in airlines and airports have disrupted international travel beyond ones control. This has reinforced the importance of having the best travel insurance which can help defray the cost of travel disruptions as well as any unexpected health related expenses of the traveler during travel.

An US citizen covid travel medical insurance policy can protect the traveler from financial difficulty in the event of a medical emergency or accident. Some travel medical insurance plans also provide coverage for quarantine expenses should one test positive for Covid19 while traveling. In fact Covid quarantine travel insurance is being mandated by some countries while issuing travel visas. Travel insurance with a focus on trip expenses provide financial security for trip related expenses like trip cancellation, trip delay, baggage loss and medical evacuation.

Some travel insurance plans provide the option to 'Cancel for Any reason' (CFAR) by providing a refund of up to 75% of the trip cost if one cancels the trip for any reason. Should the traveler cancel the trip because of a medical emergency, without travel insurance, they will be left stranded and responsible for all the costs associated with the trip. Having reliable travel insurance will ensure that the travelers can recoup some of the trip expenses should they face adverse circumstances during travel.

Factors to consider while buying travel insurance

American traveler insurance including trip cancellation coverage

US citizens should consider buying travel insurance especially if traveling outside their home state. The travel insurance plans are designed for US vacationers with coverage for insuring the health of the traveler as well the trip expenses cost. Some examples of coverage benefits are trip cancellation, trip delay, Covid quarantine expenses, medical evacuation, injury of family member, travel companion or pet, theft of passport, traffic accident, inclement weather resulting in delay or cancellation of common carrier.

Travelers can also include the Cancel for Any reason (CFAR) which gives travelers the option of cancelling their travel and recouping most of their non-refundable trip expenses. Travel insurance provides coverage in the following ways:
  1. Non refundable cost of the trip.
  2. Unexpected medical expenses of the traveler.
  3. Loss or damage to the insured’s possessions.

An overview

Pandemic travel insurance for US travelers

Travel regulations in the US have been in a state of flu for a long time due the Covid pandemic, international travel has however continued despite the Covid sub-variants. Unfortunately, even years after the pandemic started in China, Covid is again making a comeback with new immune-evasive variants. The Covid situation is made even more complicated with influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) which are also spreading earlier and faster than usual in the US.

Thanks to increased vaccination and a decrease in the virulence, Covid related fatalities has reduced and travel restrictions have been relaxed. However given these uncertain circumstances, and the risk of falling ill, it is important to buy good travel insurance with Covid coverage.

This becomes vital should the traveler be forced to Quarantine as a result of a positive Covid test. Travelers can find the cheapest Covid travel insurance available using the tools in our website.

Covid Quarantine insurance for US citizens

US Citizens who have traveled overseas are now no longer required to get tested for COVID19 before traveling back to the US. This was earlier mandatory by the US government, and this requirement is currently under abeyance based on the trajectory of the pandemic.

However, despite the removal of Covid related restrictions, it is prudent for US citizens to buy travel insurance with Covid quarantine expenses included given the pandemic and different Covid sub-variants.

US travelers can either buy US Covid quarantine coverage trip insurance (includes coverage for cost of the trip), or Covid quarantine travel health insurance (insures only the health of the traveler and is cheaper than trip insurance).

US Expatriate Health Insurance options for living in the Caribbean Islands

US Expatriates living in the Caribbran and outside the United States get limited coverage from their US health insurance including Medicare. They also do not qualify for domestic health insurance in the adopted country of living. In this situation, expatriate medical insurance plans are important. Travel and Trip Insurance plans for US citizens abroad coming to the US and traveling on cruise outside the US
question Hi,
My husband and I have been living in the UK since March 2020 and will continue to live and work here until 2023. However, we are U.S. citizens and own an apartment in New York City.
We intend to travel to New York in a couple of week’s time and would like to make sure that we have sufficient medical coverage during our time in the U.S., roughly 6 weeks.
I want to make sure before I purchase a policy with your company that it is valid for a New York long-term resident, although currently living outside the U.S., to purchase such a plan. The reason for my need to purchase the plan is my health insurance coverage through my employer is currently in the U.K., not the U.S. I have read some information on the internet that U.S. citizens living abroad, or perhaps even New York residents, might not be able to buy such medical insurance protection.
Please advise me if I am covered if I get something like the Patriot Platinum plan for me and my husband for our upcoming 6-week trip to the U.S.

Thank you,
Scott Davis

question Hi,
I purchased a plan earlier this year to the U.S. and it gave me great peace of mind, thank you. I’m still living in the UK (I’m a US citizen), and plan to travel to the U.S in December and get on a cruise ship that will sail to the Caribbean. I couldn’t see any details in any of your plans on what is covered aboard a cruise ship. can you provide me information on which plan I need to select to make sure I’m covered on cruise ships?
Scott

question Dear Scott,
You are covered on cruise ships as well. We have travel insurance plans and trip insurance plans that provide medical coverage on cruise ships. The difference between travel insurance and trip insurance plans is that the trip insurance provides coverage for trip cancellation and covers the cost of the cruise tickets in case of cancellation. Trip cancellation coverage is not available with the travel insurance plan.

question Hi,

For clarity’s sake, does your travel insurance plan (for example Patriot Platinum) cover healthcare issues while on a cruise ship?

Secondly, does that Patriot Platinum plan cover trip cancellation in the event we got sick during our cruise and needed to be airlifted to a hospital?

If not, is there a single plan that covers both?

Thank you kindly,
Scott
