What is Student Journey Lite Health Insurance?

Student Journey Lite is IMG's budget student insurance plan designed for international students studying in the United States on F1, J1, or M1 visas. It's designed to help satisfy visa and university insurance requirements while keeping monthly costs affordable providing coverage for the accidents, illnesses, and medical emergencies that are most likely to occur during your studies without paying for benefits that many healthy students rarely use.

The plan uses the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network, one of the largest provider networks in the country, giving students access to healthcare providers nationwide. Student Journey Lite keeps premiums low through a modest deductible, a six-month waiting period before pre-existing conditions become eligible for coverage, and by excluding benefits such as maternity and long-term chronic care management that most students typically do not need during their first year of study in the USA.

Note for New York and Washington residents: Benefit limits and maximums under Student Journey Lite may vary for residents of New York (NY) and Washington (WA) due to state-specific insurance regulations. Your exact Certificate of Insurance will reflect any state-specific adjustments - confirm your state's terms before purchasing if you reside in NY or WA.

What Students Actually Need to Check First?

Not every "cheap student insurance" plan checks these boxes. Here's how Student Journey Lite stacks up against what actually matters.

check
Does it meet my visa and university requirement?
Visa-compliant for F1, J1, and M1 - but always confirm against your specific school's minimum insurance policy before buying.
check
Can I actually find a doctor near campus?
Runs on the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network - one of the largest provider networks in the U.S.
check
What do I pay before coverage kicks in?
A $100 deductible per injury or illness - low enough that a single urgent care visit won't wipe out your budget.
check
Is mental health and telehealth support included?
24/7 telehealth access plus outpatient mental health visits - not just physical injuries and illness.
check
What happens if I have an existing condition?
Covered after a 6-month waiting period - know this upfront rather than discovering it at claim time.
check
How much will this actually cost me monthly?
From $30/month depending on your age and chosen coverage - priced by the month, not buried in a lump annual figure.

Provider Access

What Is a PPO Network in Student Journey Lite Insurance?

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) network is a group of doctors, hospitals, and clinics contracted to provide care at pre-negotiated, lower rates to insured students.

Student Journey Lite uses the UnitedHealthcare Options network, which is a longstanding reputable tier one network that gives you more access to more doctors and services. You can also enjoy access to quality healthcare worldwide with our proprietary IPA network that includes over 18,550 physicians and facilities.

Because UnitedHealthcare providers offer direct billing, you typically won't need to pay large sums upfront and wait for reimbursement — the provider bills IMG directly for in-network care.

If you purchase Student Journey Lite insurance from IMG with a United Healtcare logo on your insurance card, please state the following when informing your healthcare provider about your IMG travel insurance - "My healthcare coverage uses the United Healthcare travel health insurance network."

United Healthcare Provider Network

Lower out-of-pocket costs: Visiting an in-network provider means the provider bills IMG directly, reducing surprise bills for budget-conscious international students.

Global access: Outside the U.S. or when traveling, students also have access to IMG's proprietary IPA network of over 18,550 physicians and facilities worldwide.

Tip: When checking in at a US hospital or clinic, say: "My healthcare coverage uses the United Healthcare travel health insurance network." Always confirm PPO participation directly with the provider before your visit.

Cancellation and Refunds

Student Journey Lite Insurance Cancellation and Refund Information?

Before the effective date (free look period): Most IMG plans, including Student Journey Lite, offer a short review window (typically within 3 days of purchase) during which you can cancel for a full premium refund if you're not satisfied with the coverage.

After the Effective Date (After 3 Days): Cancellation is still possible, but the refund amount depends on whether any claims have been filed:

  • If a claim has been filed, the premium is considered fully earned and no refund is issued.
  • If no claim has been filed, the refund is calculated on a pro-rated basis for the unused portion of the coverage period, minus any applicable cancellation fee.

Refunds are typically processed within 7–14 business days. See our full cancellation policy for details.

Step-by-step guide

How Does Student Journey Lite Insurance Work?

1
Step 1 - Before you see a doctor Before you see a doctor

Your policy covers sudden illness, accidental injury, COVID-19 (treated as any other illness), and acute onset of pre-existing conditions after the 6-month waiting period. Routine checkups, elective procedures, and non-emergency dental/vision care are excluded.

Call IMG first for major events: 1-800-628-4664 - available 24/7 in multiple languages.

2
Step 2 - At the hospital or clinic

Show your IMG insurance ID card at a UnitedHealthcare PPO provider to minimize out-of-pocket costs. Out-of-network providers are allowed, but you pay upfront and file for reimbursement.

Hospital admission?: Pre-certification is required for non-emergency admissions - skipping it can cut your benefit by 50%.

3
Step 3 - Understand your bill

Pay your $100 deductible, then Student Journey Lite pays according to its fixed benefit schedule (e.g., 100% on physician visits, telehealth, urgent care; 80% with a $350 illness deductible on unadmitted ER visits).

4
Step 4 - File a claim

Submit your claim documents to IMG for reimbursement of covered expenses. Keep every receipt, itemized bill, and doctor's note.

IMG contact: Phone 1-800-628-4664 · Email [email protected] · Mail: PO Box 240429, Apple Valley, MN 55124, USA

Processing time: 10–30 business days after IMG receives all documents. Claim denied? You have 60 days to appeal.

5
Step 5 - Reimbursement & policy continuation

IMG pays covered amounts by cheque or direct deposit in U.S. dollars. Your policy remains active until it expires or your $150,000 per-illness / $400,000 total maximum is reached.

Common Questions

IMG Student Journey Lite - FAQs

The U.S. government does not require F1 students to carry insurance, but nearly every university does, and U.S. healthcare costs are among the highest in the world — a single ER visit or hospital stay can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Purchasing cheap student insurance like Student Journey Lite before you arrive protects you from unexpected medical debt.
Costs typically range from $30 to $96/month for Student Journey Lite, depending on the student's age, with higher-tier plans like Plus and Platinum costing more but offering richer benefits and higher per-illness maximums.
Yes. It's specifically designed for F1, J1, and M1 visa holders and is one of the most affordable F1 student insurance options that still satisfies most university insurance mandates.
Yes — it exceeds the U.S. Department of State's minimum J1 requirements of $100,000 medical coverage, $50,000 evacuation, and $25,000 repatriation, offering $150,000, $60,000, and $25,000 respectively.
No. Medicare is a U.S. government program available only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have paid into the system. International students on F1, J1, or M1 visas are not eligible and need private international student health insurance instead.
Often, yes — most schools accept proof of comparable outside coverage for a waiver. Confirm your university's exact minimum coverage, deductible, and network requirements before purchasing, since some schools require higher limits than Lite provides.
Student Journey Lite is one of the cheapest student insurance plans available, with rates starting at about $1 per day ($30/month) for younger students. Despite its low cost, the plan includes important benefits such as hospitalization, emergency medical treatment, urgent care, telehealth services, and prescription drug coverage. With a $100 deductible and $150,000 per-illness maximum, it offers budget-friendly protection for international students. Before purchasing, students should verify their university's insurance requirements, as some schools may require higher coverage limits or additional benefits.
Student Journey Lite is designed for F1, J1, and M1 students who are actively enrolled in a degree, language, or exchange program in the United States. Students participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) may also be eligible if they continue to meet the plan's requirements. Before enrolling, students should review the eligibility criteria and coverage details to ensure the plan meets their visa status, school requirements, and healthcare needs.
Lite has a $150,000 per-illness maximum and $100 deductible starting around $30/month. Plus increases the per-illness maximum to $300,000 with a $500 deductible, starting around $48/month, and adds richer coinsurance-based benefits.
Yes, after a 6-month waiting period from your policy's effective date, subject to the terms of your Certificate of Insurance.
Yes, COVID-19 is treated the same as any other covered illness under the plan's standard benefits and deductible.
Routine physical exams, elective/cosmetic procedures, most vision and routine dental care, chronic pre-existing conditions (before the 6-month mark), and injuries from excluded high-risk activities (unless the Adventure Sports Rider is purchased) are generally not covered.
Yes. Spouses (F2/J2/M2) and children traveling with the student can be added to the same policy application.
It depends on the plan's coverage limits, the student's age, the required medical maximum, and the chosen deductible. International student insurance plans like Student Journey Lite are generally more affordable than university-sponsored group plans while offering comparable core benefits.
Student Journey Lite includes limited maternity coverage for eligible students. The plan provides up to $5,000 for normal delivery, up to $7,500 for a Cesarean section (C-section), and up to $500 for newborn care. To qualify for maternity benefits, conception must occur after the policy effective date.
