How do you handle international travel medical insurance for pre-existing chronic conditions?

Visitor travel health insurance plans never cover regular, required medical care for a chronic condition. For example, if a traveler takes medication regularly or requires treatment like dialysis, those things will have to be paid for out of pocket by the traveler and should be calculated into the cost of their trip. If medications are lost or stolen and need to be replace, that will require a doctor visit to get a prescription and then the purchase at the pharmacy all of which would have to be paid for by the insured. If the concern is for a sudden, unexpected flare up with a chronic, pre-existing condition, then there are a few plans which will cover that, but they are quite expensive and must be purchased for at least 90 days. Note also, that those plans also must be purchased BEFORE the travel begins and cover only travel to the US (some include Canada and Mexico).

Is $100,000 enough for travel insurance?

It depends. It depends primarily on where you are traveling to. For travel to Europe, some are required to purchase travel health insurance and many European countries only require $50,000, so that should be enough for travel to those countries. In other countries, like the US, Canada, and Japan costs are rising and one may want a higher amount of coverage if traveling there. The amount that is available for purchase depends on the age of the traveler, so the choice of maximum should be made depending on availability and destination of the traveler.

Thank you,
Vidut

Dear Vidut,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your visitor medical insurance needs!. If your visitor will be staying for three months or longer, you may want to consider a plan we are offering called Elite plan from INF. It will cover 80% of expenses including many unexpected medical issues due to pre-existing conditions. The coverage is NOT limited to "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions.

The look-back period for the plan is only 90 days which means you have a much better chance of having pre-existing medical conditions covered, especially if they are stable for your. The plan has a $75,000 maximum for persons over 69 years and $150,000 for persons under 70 with a $250 or $500 deductible (same for pre-existing condition coverage). It is an 80/20 plan covering 80% while you pay 20% of expenses. For all information about the plan, go here:

INF Elite plan

This is a very unique plan offering "full" coverage for pre-existing conditions with such a short look back period for those conditions. Please note that the plan does NOT cover routine, necessary treatment for a pre-existing conditions. The coverage is for any issue arising, not just "acute" (or something that must be treated right away) issues.

Another option is the same coverage for pre-existing conditions from a fixed plan. A fixed plan will pay a limited amount for each medical expense (it may not cover 100%), please see brochure for details. Like the Elite plan above coverage is available up to $150,000 for persons under 70 years and $100,000 for those 70 to 99 years of age.

Persons under 70 years can choose between a $250 or $75 deductible, with other clients choices of $250 or $500 deductible. With the Premier plan, you must choose the deductible for the pre-existing condition coverage and that determines the maximum coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions (the higher the deductible, the higher the maximum you are allowed). For all information about the plan, go here:

INF Premier plan

Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns about this or other plans you may find on our website.
