Hawaii (pronounced ha-vahee-ee by locals) is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States of America in 1959. It is the only state in Oceania and it is the northernmost group of Polynesian islands in the Pacific Ocean and therefore the only state outside North America. There are eight main islands, but many more in the Hawaiian archipelago formed volcanically by a “hot spot” on the ocean floor. The main islands are, in order from most recently formed to oldest and from northwest to southeast are: Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, Maui, and Hawai'i island. The last, Hawai’i Island is also called the ‘Big Island’ to differentiate it from the state name (and it is the largest). Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii and is located in the island of Oʻahu. The World War II Valor in the Pacific Monument, which is home of the USS Arizona Memorial is located in Honolulu. The USS Arizona Memorial is the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Hawaii is graced with several other national parks. You can find Hawai’i Volcanos, Kaloko-Honokohau, and Pu’uhonua O Honaunau on the Big Island. The Haleakala National Park is located on the island of Maui. The tropical weather, beaches, and reef attractions make this a holiday destination for many travelers around the world.
Although the island of Oahu is the most visited of the Hawaiian Islands, most visitors head straight for the capital city of Honolulu.
The beach is part of a state park located on the Kohala Coast, putting it within a short driving distance of popular hotel destinations like Kona and Waikoloa.
On the island of Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, you can explore the famed Na Pali Coast. Along the coast, sheer cliffs covered in lush, green vegetation drop off.
Just a few miles inland of the Na Pali Coast of Kauai is Waimea Canyon. Also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon is one of the most amazing places to visit in Hawaii.
