Student Insurance question and answers

01. Student Insurance with sports coverage for dual citizenship of Australia and US
questionHello,
Hello, my son has dual citizenship both Australian and American. He has only ever lived in Australia but has citizenship through his father. He has been accepted for a 2 year college program in California and Im looking for travel and health insurance for him. He has been given a scholarship to be on the college's soccer program. The college he will be attending does not offer insurance.
Given that he has a US passport and citizenship he will be entering the US travelling on his US passport and so will not need a student visa. Can you assist me with trying to find insurance bearing in mind he is there to be on the soccer program (as well as attending classes). Some insurance will not cover students who are playing competition games with other colleges. Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Helen Wood

02. US student Insurance coverage for athletic-related injuries

questionHello,
Your name came up on a web article as I was researching insurance policies available to student athletes attending American universities.
Our daughter (age 17; will turn 18 in Aug.) will be attending university in Wisconsin. We are Canadian residents in Nova Scotia, but she is a dual U.S./Candian citizen. She is planning to play on the university's women's basketball team, and the season lasts approximately 5 months, from Nov to March.
According to NCAA athletic association rules, she must provide evidence of insurance that includes coverage for athletic-related injuries, with a coverage limit of at least $90,000. She has medical insurance that covers her in the U.S., but not for intercollegiate athletics.
I wondered if you might be able to provide a quote for a policy that would cover her as a university athlete in the U.S.

Regards,
Marge Garren

questionDear Marge,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Student sports insurance needs!
If you are interested in the student plans which include coverage for intercollegiate sports, then you can refer to the below link for that information. You can get an idea of cost and options by putting your information here: Student insurance.
Some student insurance plans exclude coverage for Intercollegiate sports governed by NCAA for most F1 visa students.
The only plan that covers NCAA college sports is the Diplomat America Insurance with the rider.

06. Student health insurance for diabetes

questionDear American Visitor Insurance,
I am going to the US to seek my Masters Degree on August.
I have Type 1 Diabetes since I am 7 years old. I am 23 years old, i am looking ways on which insurance could be the best fit for me? since i have been investigating and insulin is very expensive in the US!.
Regards,
Milka

questionDear Milka,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!
Congratulations on your Master’s Degree work! The plans we offer do not cover any maintenance medication or treatment. I'm afraid that you will have to pay for that out of pocket. However, prices can vary widely by pharmacy and there are "discount cards" that are free that also change the prices significantly. I would check, for example, the Walmart pharmacy. They are famous for having many routine medications available for $40 per month. You may have to be sure a generic is OK, but that might be a good route for you. Certainly our plans will help you should you become ill or injured, but you will have to figure out how to get your insulin and doctor visits for the diabetes taken care of.
A great student plan is:

07. Health Insurance for International students for Melbourne High School - High School Coverage

questionHi,
I wanted to touch base with you to possibly get an insurance quote for our international students for next year. I will have approximately 30-35 to cover. I don't need a premium plan...if we could get a quote on a middle of the road plan...that has a co-pay for office visits (I am thinking it would be less expensive)... They are all on an F1 Visa.
I have a few questions about your coverage: What/who in the Melbourne, Florida area accepts this insurance? Do the students have to pay in advance and then submit a claim form? What is the pre-existing conditions waiting period? If they were to go to a doctor for a simple check up and/or basic sports physical, would the visit be covered or there a co-pay due/ Please respond as soon as possible as I will be making a decision by July 19. Regards
Missie

questionDear Missie,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!
We have several group plans we could go with. The one I have in mind for you is called Patriot Exchange and I like it because there is a $100 deductible payable per injury/sickness and no other charge. It will cost about $57 per student per month for a $250,000 maximum policy (this includes full coverage for injuries sustained doing HS sports). The other group plans all have a deductible and after that a coinsurance payment of 20% usually of the next $5000. Here are links to the policy I am recommending for you. (Note that the "add-on" includes coverage for high school sports, so I included that in the price) To get a free quote and/or buy Patriot Exchange insurance:

The suggested plan has a waiting period of 12 months for coverage of pre-existing conditions.
Please see the provider network at the below link where you can find the providers near your area by giving your zipcode:
local_hospital Provider Network

Payment for the claims is totally dependent on the providers. Generally if you go to a provider within the network they might do direct billing. If not, you will have to make the payment in advance and get it reimbursed by sending the scanned bill receipts to the insurance company.
There are no coverage available for wellness in this plan. If you need this, there is another plan below:

questionHello,
I am an international student studying in Canada, I plan to go to the Iceland in December. To apply the visa, I need a travel insurance which has a minimum coverage of 30000 Euros. Therefore, I am wondering if this insurance works for me.
Thanks,
Sylvia

questionDear Sylvia,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!
The Patriot plan is very popular with international travelers and has many excellent features. In particular, their coverage of "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions up to the maximum of the plan for medical expenses and an additional $25,000 for emergency medical evacuation can put your mind at ease. Also, if you family has citizenship from different countries, you will be able to list this accurately for each person on the policy. This is suitable for people traveling to European countries. You can use this plan for your travel to Iceland.

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your International students health insurance needs! Students and scholars on F or J visas have the best coverage for maternity coverage. However, the best coverage available is 80% coverage of costs, so please be aware that you will be responsible for a portion of all costs. There are four policies that cover maternity at an 80% coverage without a set limit on benefits. I will list them in order of their approximate cost. Note that conception has to occur after the start of the plan and most plans ask that you let them know at least three months before your delivery date.

questionDear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your reply to my inquiry. Before I purchase a policy on behalf of my son, I need to know which do I check in regards to his citizenship? He has both an American passport as well as a Japanese passport. He has dual citizenship. His permanent residency is in Japan and he has no permanent address in America. However, he will be studying English as a non-student at the University of Central Florida for one year from this week. He does not quality for their insurance as he did not need an F1 visa to enter America. Which should I check as his citizenship on the insurance application form.

I would like to consider all insurance providers for my son as a Japanese citizen given he does not have a permanent address in the US and he does live and reside permanently in Japan. He will need a policy from March 21, 2018 to February 28, 2019 for his visit in the US. On February 28, 2019, he will return to Japan. Again this is my son's situation and I would like to inquire about other insurance providers which will meet those conditions. Thank you again for your assistance.

Let me add I would like to consider an insurance policy which includes United Healthcare as the primary health network.
Thank you.
Martin

The insurance plan policy maximum and type of coverage determine the price of the plan. Most universities have the requirement that the policy must cover per injury or sickness. The next factors are deductible, coinsurance and copay, these are the part of payment you need to make for expenses of the treatment of an injury or sickness. There some requirements for a coverage that the plan should offer, like the pre-existing cover, dental cover, mental illness coverage, sports cover, preventive care cover and cover for dependents. All these factors affect the price of the insurance plan. More the benefits higher will be the price of the plan.
Review these factors for the best student insurance plan in detail.
Keeping these things in mind you can get free quotes for international student health insurance by answering a few questions based your requirements. A list of popular student insurance plans will be displayed from reputed insurance providers. You can select 2 or more plans to compare and finally choose the best plan satisfying your needs.
Please let us know if we help you in any further.

24. Queries on student health insurance plans

questionHi,
I have some questions regarding the insurance.

  • How much time do you take to send the insurance id card after the purchase of the insurance plan?
  • Can you send me the complete policy including the exclusions & limitations and dependent coverage?
  • The insurance plan is covered under a health plan that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?
  • The plan include medical evacuation and repatriation or a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP?
I will really appreciate if you help me with this questions.
Please contact me as soon as possible
Thank you.
Ariel

questionDear Ariel,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your International Students health insurance needs!
Here are the answers to your questions:
  • How much time do you take to send the insurance id card after the purchase of the insurance plan?
Answer: The purchase of the insurance plan is online. Once the purchase transaction is completed successfully, you will receive a confirmation email from the insurance company and the policy details are attached to this email. The ID Card also is attached with the policy details in the confirmation email. You can print that and use it.
  • Can you send me the complete policy including the exclusions & limitations and dependent coverage?
Answer: All the required details will be available in the confirmation email which you will have to download and print. The exclusions and limitations are listed in the brochure of the plan in a PDF document.
  • The insurance plan is covered under a health plan that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?
Answer: Our student insurance plans are not specified as ACA compliant. But you can compare the benefits and see if the requirements match the ACA compliancy.
  • The plan include medical evacuation and repatriation or a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP?
Answer: Can you please let us know the requirements of SHIP? I am not familiar with that. The plans definitely have medical evacuation and repatriation coverage but we do not know if they have to be purchased according to the SHIP.
Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

27. F1 visa health insurance quotes for group of students

questionHi,
I wanted to touch base with you to possibly get an insurance quote for our international students for next year. I will have approximately 30-35 students to cover. I don't need a premium plan...if we could get a quote on a middle of the road plan...that has a co-pay for office visits (I am thinking it would be less expensive). They are all on an F1 VISA.
Thank you.
Missie

questionDear Missie,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your F1 visa student health insurance needs!.
(Note that the "add-on" includes coverage for high school sports, so I included that in the price):

For more information regarding to the Patriot Exchange Insurance plan, please peruse the Patriot Exchange brochure, the PPO network and buy Patriot Exchange Insurance online.

35. Student Insurance for F1 visa holder and her dependents

questionDear Madam or Sir,
I am planning to have F1 status for US University, and considering the medical insurance plans, after checking your website, I am very interesting to go deep to learn which plan is much more fit for me. Please help to check if I have F1 status in US for coming 4 years, and if the medical insurance plan can cover my spouse and my kid? My age is 38 years and same with my spouse, my kid is 8 years. And how the plan can cover the pre-condition for us? Especially for my kid?
Thanks,
Look forward getting your feedback,
Best Regards
Martina

questionDear Martina,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your F1 visa student health insurance needs!. Do you have any specific requirements that your university wants you to meet for your health insurance? Often they do have specific requirements that must be met. If there are no specific requirements, then you are eligible to purchase any of our student plans. Be sure you enter your wife and child's information to get options that include them and include them in the price. A very good plan is Patriot Exchange with a great price and benefits. Also, if your child is under 10 years old, then the Altas plan offers the child free with a paying adult, so their price is hard to beat.
Let us know if you have any requirements, so we can compare them to what we have to offer. Otherwise, I will put links to the above plans I mentioned below:

36. Berkeley City College Requirements

questionHello,
UC Berkeley can waive my requirement to buy insurance from their provider as long as my insurance meets theirs requirements, which are:

  • $500,000 per accident/illness in medical coverage
  • Policy deductible of no more than $250 per year
  • Coinsurance does not exceed 25%
  • Medical evacuation of $10,000
  • Repatriation of $7,500
So, my questions are:
Scenario 1: How much it would cost me to buy insurance from you from August 7 through August 31, 2013? And then, from December 1, 2013 to January 10 (considering that part of this period I will be in Chile, and that I won't come back to Spain until January 10, 2014)? Could I buy insurance from you in this scenario?
Scenario 2: Assuming that you insurance meets UC Berkeley requirements, how much it would cost me to buy insurance from you from August 7, 2013 through January 10, 2014?

I apologize if this is confusing. Please, let me know if you prefer for me to call.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Best!

37. Medical Insurance for student with dual citizenship already in US for 4 years

questionHello,
I am writing as I wish to purchase some health insurance for my 23 year old son who is currently in the U,S, and his coverage with Highmark PPO insurance, which was purchased for his previous college year but ends on 31 July. The following are circumstances:

  • Has been attending college in the U.S. For the previous four years on an international student visa.
  • Permanent home address is Brisbane Australia.
  • Holds Canadian and Australian citizenship.
  • Is working (allowable at the end of his student visa) as a tennis coach at a College in New York for the summer and then other areas around New York City until the end of April 2016.
  • I would like to purchase top coverage up to $5 million with $2,500 deductible.
Can you please advise if his is eligible for one of your health insurance policies.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Patricia

questionDear customer support,
I want to get a quote for medical insurance for international students attending Emory U as freshman this fall.
Personal data of student:
Male age 19, Coverage: August 19, 2015 to May 31, 2016.

Sincerely,
Kara C

questionDear Kara,
Thank you for contacting us for your International student health insurance needs!
I have looked over the requirements for Emory and it looks like there is ONE policy which will meet and exceed these requirements. The policy is Study USA and will cost $72.27 per month. It has a maximum of $250,000 and a deductible of $50. The main problem with the other policies (which could be cheaper) is the very odd requirement of $25,500 for repatriation. Most policies are only $25,000 so that is why you are limited to that choice.
Here are the links and information for that policy:

39. Terms and Conditions for Insurance

questionDear American Visitor Insurance,
When I went to pay the Student Secure I must accept the terms and conditions before, can you explain me the meaning of this?

" I understand that Lloyd's operates as an approved, non-admitted insurer in all states of the United States except Illinois and Kentucky where they are admitted. As such, claims under this insurance may not be made against any state guaranty fund. "

Thank you very much.
Bea

questionDear Bea,
Thank you for contacting us for your Student health insurance needs!
Every state's insurance department has their own funds that they use to pay claims of state residents' whose insurer - whether it be health, life, home, etc. - is no longer solvent and cannot pay the claims of its members, or in other words keep their promise because they ran out of money. The only insurance companies whose members can receive payment from these funds would be those that are admitted by the state.

Since the international products offered by WorldTrips are underwritten by Lloyd's, in all states but Kentucky (KY) and Illinois (IL), WorldTrips customers would not be able to submit their claim to the insurance department in the event WorldTrips is no longer able to pay claims.

However, please be aware that WorldTrips is one of the most financially stable specialty insurers in the world, with the ratings to match, and a surplus of over $9B. The language can be a little unnerving but it would be nearly impossible for WorldTrips to not be able to pay claims on our policies due to financial stability. One of the benefits of choosing WorldTrips is the financial strength and stability. But since WorldTrips is not technically admitted in most states, they are still required to include that language.

I hope this is able to clear your concern. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

43. Student Health Insurance for F1 Visa holder

questionDear Madam/Sir,
Thank you very much for your mail with the list of "Compare Students Insurance", which I found very helpful.
Here, I would like to raise two questions for your kind assistance, if possible:
1) I am looking for a medical insurance plan for my son, who is 18 years old and will come to Ohio this coming August for a 4-year undergraduate study as a F-1 foreign student. But I notice that the medical covers you collect are either for the US, or worldwide excluding the US.
My question is: is there any additional medical insurance plan or solution for his short travel out of the US and also for his short stay in his home country China (for example in the summer vocation or Christmas holiday)?
2) I notice that some medical insurance providers offer their products for F-1 foreign students only on a maximum 10-month period per year. I wonder what is the thinking behind the design of the 10-month policy period and how about the rest two-month period without medical cover?
Thank you very much for your kind reply and time in advance!

44. Health Insurance for Chinese Citizen to study in IWO State University

questionDear American Visitor Insurance,
I want to buy insurance for my niece who is a Chinese citizen and will be an international student of IWO State University. She needs insurance for a couple of weeks before her University insurance policy starts. I need your help and advice.

Thank you,
Frank

question
Frank
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!. The Patriot insurance plan offered by IMG is specifically designed for short term visitors to USA and is a hugely popular choice among tourists to America. Because your niece will only need a couple of weeks of insurance before her school insurance kicks in, I will suggest a short term visitor insurance instead. The student policies are great but must be purchased for whole months only. This way, you only pay for the days she will need. The Patriot America Lite plan will cost $28 for a $500,000 maximum plan with a $250 deductible. You can select other maximum and deductible amounts if you like.

You can start the insurance as soon as the following day, so you will be able to make the purchase before she leaves (provided you buy it tomorrow on the 12th) and you can make the purchase for her from Canada and you only need the information that you have (name, date of birth, passport number). You can still purchase it after she leaves China, but her travel and anything that should happen before the policy starts, would, of course, not be covered.

You can get all details about Patriot America Lite insurance policy and buy the Patriot America Lite insurance policy online. Please let us know if we can help you with any queries regarding to plan details.

questionHello,
I have a daughter who is 15 years old and is coming to US as a student. She will be attending the residential treatment center. She is a Canadian citizen. I was looking for a plan that would cover her for mental health. She has behavioral problems. Can you suggest me something that covers her condition?
Thanks,
Marie McCloskey

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!.
We have spoken to the IMG and WorldTrips plan administrators regarding the student plan that you need that will cover mental illness and your specific case.
The condition that your daughter has will be treated as pre existing and will have certain waiting period to be covered by the insurance. If she has any injury due to this it totally depends on the medical records that gets submitted to the insurance company.
IMG has a plan called Student Health Advantage. This plan has a 12 month waiting period to cover the illness.
The WorldTrips student plans do cover this condition as pre existing with a waiting period of 6 months but these plans are eligible only for students on F1 Visa.
You are eligible to purchase the Atlas plan from WorldTrips but this will not have coverage for the mental health.
Below are the links for the Student Health Advantage and the Atlas plan if you are interested:

We requested online fulfillment and downloaded a copy of the policy summary but we have not received the promised email. It is possible that we may have entered the wrong email address online.
Could you please send a copy of the email confirmation/policy details to this email address by return?

51. Health Insurance for medical student from Nigeria

question
Hi,
I am a medical student from Nigeria and i am preparing for an elective programme in the US. How do i get the cheapest international student insurance package?

questionHello,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!. Simply use our student medical insurance compare engine. You must make sure that you choose a plan to meet your institution’s requirements. Our staff can help you make a good choice. However, you still have an extra hurdle since you are from Nigeria. Unfortunately, due to the high amount of fraud from your country, many companies won’t accept online applications from Nigerian citizens. If your country is not on the list of their online application, you can still submit a paper application (by mail or fax) for the insurance that will work for you. The paper applications can be usually be found at the end of the brochure. To use our Student Medical Insurance Compare Engine click the below link:

52. Student Health Insurance for International student visiting US

question
Dear customer support,
I am an international student coming to the US. Please recommend affordable plans for me.
Thanks you,
Amyra

questionDear Amyra,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs!. The Patriot Exchange insurance plan offered by International Medical Group (IMG) provides comprehensive insurance for international students (F1 visa) and J1 visa scholars in the USA. It satisfies J1 visa and most US university requirements and is hugely popular. For a policy max of 50,000 and 100 deductible (please note that the deductible is PER INJURY/SICKNESS), your total premium for one month is 223.98. This plan is renewable for up 48 months.

You can also buy the Patriot Exchange Insurance plan online by perusing the Patriot Exchange insurance brochure. Please let us know if we can help you with any information regarding Patriot Exchange insurance plan details.

Another excellent comprehensive plan is the Atlas American by WorldTrips.. And for a policy max of 50,000 and 100 deductible (your deductible for this plan is PER POLICY PERIOD), your total premium for a month is 273.42.This policy can be renewed up to 1 year.
You can get all information about Atlas insurance, see the brochure, search the PPO network and buy the policy in the website.
This policy is very popular with international travelers and has many excellent features. In particular, their coverage of "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions up to $100,000 or the maximum of the plan (whichever is smaller) for medical expenses and an additional $25,000 for emergency medical evacuation can put your mind at ease.
Feel free to call us or email us with any questions or comments you may have.

53. Group International Student Health Insurance for colleges in the U.S

question
Dear customer support,
Do you offer group international student health and accident policies for colleges in the U.S?
Thanks,
Steve

questionDear Steve,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your Students health insurance needs! Here are some options for your international students:

Patriot Exchange Group administered by International Medical Group (IMG) This is a student policy with a $100 deductible per injury/sickness. The student would only pay the deductible and nothing after that (unless there is another sickness or injury). Also, if a student can use a college health center, they only pay a $5 copay (no deductible). These are great advantages to the plan. The plan is only for sudden illness and accident and will not cover collegiate sports involvement (recreational activities are OK). No mental health or maternity coverage. There are several maximum options: $50,000, $250,000 and $500,000. The approximate costs by age and maximum per month are as follows:

18-24 25-49
$50,000 $46 $58
$250,000 $58 $71
$500,000 $61 $88

Patriot Travel Group policy is a visitor policy also administered by IMG (not just for students). The student pays a one time deductible. After that, they pay a 10 or 20% coinsurance amount up to $5000. It is 10% if they are within the PPO network and 20% if they are outside the network. There is no coverage for collegiate sports (recreational activities are OK). No mental health or maternity coverage. This policy has many deductible options from $0 to $2,500. I will only list a $100 deductible option here to compare with the other policies I am presenting. Here are approximate costs by age and maximum:

18-29 30-39
$50,000 $37 $39
$100,000 $46 $62
$500,000 $59 $77
$1 million $71 $91

Student Health Advantage is a more complete student plan. It covers up to $5,000 for collegiate sports, as well as mental health and maternity coverage. This policy is only available with a $100 deductible per injury/sickness and a $500,000 maximum. It also has a $5 copay if used at a student health center. The student, if outside the health center, will pay the deductible plus 20% of the next $5,000 in coinsurance if they are outside the company network. It will cost $85 per month for a student age 19-23 and $98 for a student ages 24-30.

I researched some other companies, but the costs were higher and I have had very good experience with this company and putting groups together. I'm not sure how you bill students, but it may be that we can sign up a batch for fall semester and then a second batch in the spring (to eliminate double payment for those graduating). I will have to talk to my contact about removing students. Usually, once the policy starts they charge a fee for cancellation, but I can see what we can do for you there.

Here is a link to the company's PPO network in case you want to see coverage in your area: imglobal ppo network

Let me know which option you are most interested in and I can contact the company to get more details on how we can handle cancellations. Last minute additions should not be an issue.
